Zimbabwe Time and Date Zimbabwe Culture Back to Top The year-round temperate climate of the Highveld has combined with the natural inclinations of the white population to produce an outdoor society. Tennis—whether on farms or at urban clubs—and bowling have many more followers than any ballet group. Happily for the cause of reconciliation, the first sport heroes after independence were the members of the all-white team that was awarded the first gold medal for women's field hockey in Olympic history at Moscow in 1980. The most famous of Rhodesian-bred writers, Doris Lessing, settled in England in 1949. In some contrast, the nationalist struggle prompted a renaissance of Shona culture. A forerunner of this renaissance (and a victim of the liberation struggle) was Herbert Chitepo, both as abstract painter and epic poet. Stanlake Samkange's novels reconstruct the Shona and Ndebele world of the 1890s, while those of the much younger Charles Mungoshi explore the clash of Shona and Western cultures in both the Shona and English languages. Folk traditions have survived in dance and pottery. The revival of sculpture has drawn on tribal religion and totems to produce some remarkable works, particularly those of Takawira and the Tengenenge school of craftsmen who sculpt in hard serpentine.

Smyth, 1988, p. 285 At the end of the Second World War, the film initiative shifted from war propaganda to development in the colonies. Prior to the war, Britain had a poor record of promoting development in its colonies, and this record had been criticised by Germany war propaganda as well as by the United States. The US, which emerged as the dominant superpower after the war was keen to promote economic development and political stability in the Third World, so as to avoid losing the new states to the Soviet communist bloc ( So, 1990

Great Zimbabwe zimbabwe means "stone enclosure") around 1300. Great Zimbabwe was a fortification surrounded by huge, elliptical stone walls made without any mortar. By 1500, Great Zimbabwe dominated the Zambezi Valley both militarily and commercially (the Mwenemutapa empire); because of this, the new ideas about divine kingship spread throughout the valley and changed the social structures of most of the Bantu people living there.

Speaking at the Jikinya Dance Festival held in Harare at Belvedere Teachers College over the weekend, Cde Chigwedere said dance is a reservoir of Zimbabwe's culture and serves the same purpose as that of libraries. "The different dance styles of each community depict the history, lifestyle and rituals of such communities and could play an important part in community development.

HAVING worked in the Culture Department within the Ministry of Education Sport and Culture from 1980 to 2000, I am convinced that the ministry has betrayed the nation by failing to put together a comprehensive cultural policy programme. In 1980 a Culture Department was created to rediscover the cultural wealth of Zimbabwe. It was to identify the contemporary cultural components, provide facilities and finances, generate a keen cultural awareness among the people and foster a people's pride in their own culture. Zimbabwe's Culture has fallen to the west. What is left is in badges and stitches! Before the arrival of western's - local culture endorsed the belief of living a predictable system based on superstitions, rituals and the fear of the unknown including giving tides to the dead. Many of these beliefs have since eroded due to the introduction of the market system -scattering families which usually lived together generation after generation in small communities. The norm of child upbringing roles done by aunties , to advise and speak about courting and sexual matters to their brother's children is no longer possible due to the long distances between families.
Today's culture encourages a more nuclear family perspective! However, even though Zimbabwe is becoming more Western, traditional guidelines still skim the orientation of Zimbabwe's Culture.lts still - my father wants,my mother says. While society torrents with its hunger for reasonable secondary qualifications.Highlights such as modelling, singing and embarking into sport are still in the misconception and stereotype zone of every home, yet these are the crazy of today world-wide.

Southern Africa's human history extends back through the millennia to the first rumblings of humanity on the planet. The first upright-walking 'hominids' established themselves in the savannas of southern and eastern Africa nearly 4 million years ago. These human-like creatures slowly developed into persons-as-we-know-'em as more sophisticated tools were produced and climatic conditions became more favourable. By the middle Stone Age, which lasted until 20,000 years ago, organised hunting and gathering societies had been established, and by 8000BC, late Stone Age people occupied rock shelters and caves all over southern Africa. The first inhabitants of Zimbabwe were probably nomadic, adaptable San groups, gradually absorbed by Khoi-Khoi grazier tribes, and slowly transmuting into a culture known as Khoisan. Bantu-speaking farmers, either Khoisan settlers or Iron Age migrants from the north, were the first occupants of the Great Zimbabwe site in the south of the country. Between 500 and 1000AD, the Gokomere (a Bantu group into gold-mining and cattle ranching) enslaved and absorbed San groups in the area. As early as the 11th century, some foundations and stonework were in place at Great Zimbabwe and the settlement, generally regarded as the nascent Shona society, became the trading capital of the wealthiest and most powerful society in south-eastern Africa. The hilltop acropolis at Great Zimbabwe came to serve not only as a fortress but as a shrine for the worship of Mwari, the pre-eminent Shona deity. By the 15th century, Great Zimbabwe's influence had begun to decline, due to a heady cocktail of overpopulation, overgrazing, popular uprisings and political fragmentation.

Travel Warning Early History Archaeologists have found stone-age implements and pebble tools in several areas of Zimbabwe, a suggestion of human habitation for many centuries, and the ruins of stone buildings provide evidence of early civilization. The most impressive of these sites is the "Great Zimbabwe" ruins, after which the country is named, located near Masvingo. Evidence suggests that these stone structures were built between the 9th and 13th centuries A.D. by indigenous Africans who had established trading contacts with commercial centers on Africa's southeastern coast.
