Zimbabwe
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia. Zimbabwe is a country located in the southern part of the continent of Africa , between the Victoria Falls Zambesi river, Kariba Dam and Limpopo rivers. With an area of 390,000 square kilometer and a population estimated at 11.3 million, it is surrounded by South Africa to the south, Botswana to the west, Zambia to the north and Mozambique to the east. After 33 years of administration by the British South Africa Company , from 1923 until 1980 it was officially the British colony of Southern Rhodesia, though Ian Smith's white minority government proclaimed independence unilaterally in 1965 as the State (subsequently Republic) of Rhodesia.

dealer@cynet.net For more than 1000 years, the Shona and their ancestors have lived and died on the land of Southeastern Africa. Theirs is a history of struggle and triumph over armed invaders, natural predators, disease, drought, famine, and political oppression. To combat the forces that threatened to tear them apart, the Shona developed myriad intricate and sophisticated social customs and beliefs, all of which still support one basic tenant: Live together and the culture will thrive. The Shona tribe represents approximately 70% of the population of Zimbabwe which is located on the Southeastern tip of Africa. Steeped in the legends and traditions of this ancient African culture, Shona stone sculpture is a profound expression of human connections that transcend geography and time. The origins of this remarkable art form, which was virtually unknown 40 years ago, is now internationally collected and acclaimed. For the most part Shona sculptors are self-taught without any formal training which has puzzled many art collectors and dealers that untrained sculptors have created such sophisticated and powerful sculptures from stone. We have 175 pieces of original Shona art in our collection. If you are interested in purchasing Shona sculpture, you can E-mail us at
