Zimbabwe Introduction Geography People Government ... Transnational Issues Zimbabwe Introduction Top of Page Background: The UK annexed Southern Rhodesia from the South Africa Company in 1923. A 1961 constitution was formulated to keep whites in power. In 1965 the government unilaterally declared its independence, but the UK did not recognize the act and demanded voting rights for the black African majority in the country (then called Rhodesia). UN sanctions and a guerrilla uprising finally led to free elections in 1979 and independence (as Zimbabwe) in 1980. Robert MUGABE, the nation's first prime minister, has been the country's only ruler (as president since 1987) and has dominated the country's political system since independence. http://www.marekinc.com/GeoOverviewMozRiverSystem.html
Mozambique's quandary: how to deal with the geography of southeast Africa's intricate river systems Early last year, Mozambique suffered from horrendous killer floods that forced hundreds of thousands of people, perhaps over a million, from their homes throughout the region. We have posted award winning pictures in our photo gallery done by Karel Prinsloo of South Africa , and in that gallery we point you to more pictures by other top-flight photographers. Assembling these pictures caused us to want to take a look at the geography that was responsible for Mozambique's great losses. As you will see, this region of Mozambique, Zambia, Zimbabwe and Malawi is an intricate and complex network of a great many rivers flowing from the highlands of Zimbabwe and Zambia to the lowlands of Mozambique and ultimately to her shores on the Indian Ocean. The geography explains her problem. February 11, 2001 During February and March 2000, about a year ago, Mozambique, and other regional countries including South Africa, Zimbabwe, Zambia and Madagascar all experienced heavy flooding and multiple cyclones during what was surely a historic rainy season. This picture is of Conhane, Mozambique, near Xai-Xai to the south, in February 2000. You can see the town is drowning in rainwater after weeks of heavy downpours. The photo is by Juda Ngwenya/Reuters.

My objectives are to understand the lives of "ordinary" people and how they advance their own well-being, to understand the participation of ordinary citizens in urban and rural-based economies and how their participation can be assured through democratic rights, and to understand how households and small-scale enterprises, as the lowest units of civil society, empower themselves. In pursuit of my objectives, I have conducted field research on small-scale enterprises in Zambia, Zimbabwe, Botswana, Uganda and I have visited many other sub-Saharan African countries.
