Glossary of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology
David M. Glick
Last Updated: 22 October 2002 Search the Glossary As in the first edition (Raven Press, 1990), names of metabolites, enzymes, etc. are not systematically listed, as this information is easily available in a textbook, and accessed through its index. The 'official' nomenclature of enzymes is available in Enzyme Nomenclature: Recommendations (1992) of the Nomenclature Committee of the International Union of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology on the Nomenclature and Classification of Enzymes (Webb, E.C., ed.), Academic Press, San Diego, 1992. The nomenclature of other biochemical substances (metabolites, macromolecules, vitamins, hormones, etc.) is presented in Biochemical Nomenclature and Related Documents: A Compendium, 2nd edn., published for the International Union of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology by Portland Press, London, 1992. Chemistry of Life
Chemistry Review the basics of chemistry you'll need to know to study biology. Large Molecules Learn about structures and properties of sugars, lipids, amino acids, and nucleotides, as well as macromolecules including proteins, nucleic acids and polysaccharides. Learn about the solvent properties of water, pH, pKa and buffering capacity. Clinical Correlates of pH Levels Learn how metabolic acidosis or alkalosis can arise and how these conditions shift the bicarbonate equilibrium. The body's compensatory mechanisms and treatment options are also discussed. B /Folate Learn which biological reactions require either B12 or folate (or both); what the consequences of a deficiency in either vitamin are, and the important step in which B12 and folate metabolism overlap.

A multidisciplinary scientific forum on cellular function ‘Cellular Physiology and Biochemistry’ is a multidisciplinary scientific forum dedicated to advancing the frontiers of basic cellular research. It addresses scientists from both the physiological and biochemical disciplines as well as related fields such as molecular biology, pathophysiology, pathobiochemistry and cellular pharmacology. Original papers and invited reviews on the mechanisms of intracellular transmission, cellular metabolism, cell growth and differentiation, ion channels and carriers, and the maintenance, regulation and disturbances of cell volume are presented. Appearing bimonthly under peer review, ‘Cellular Physiology and Biochemistry’ takes an active role in the concerted international effort to unravel the mechanisms of cellular function. Invitation for Papers Only original papers written in English will be considered. Manuscripts should be sent to:
