    Molecular and Cell Biology Network
MCBN M olecular and C ell B iology N etwork, is a not-for-profit association and a non-governmental organization (NGO) . It is supported by UNESCO , with which, as part of the Basic Science programs, has been working during 12 years. The following paragraphs will illustrate the need of such an organization and its goals. Most of the non-political problems that afflict the present-day world, such as malnutrition, injurious environmental factors -chemical or physical in nature-, uncontrolled population growth, degenerative diseases such as cancer immuno-deficiencies and ageing, the spreading of viral, bacterial and protozoan infectious diseases are associated with areas investigated by molecular and cell biology. While major advances have been made toward solving these problems in countries with highly developed technology, the rest of the world has not felt an appreciable impact of these solutions. During the past several decades we have witnessed spectacular progress in the application of knowledge derived from basic biological sciences to solving problems in a wide variety of areas of great importance to human welfare. These spectacular achievements have been to a large extent implemented by the application of new concepts, principles and methods in the area of molecular and cell biology. Progress in these fields has often been described as phenomenal. It is difficult - if not impossible - even in some of the best laboratories in the developed part of the world to keep up with the fast pace of advances.

Trends in Cell Biology Link to Latest issue Aims and Scope
Trends in Cell Biology provides concise, informed summaries of recent advances across the whole spectrum of cell-biological research. As well as review articles, which form the backbone of each issue, Trends in Cell Biology includes commentaries on the latest developments, hypotheses to stimulate new research avenues, discussions of developing techniques and computer technology, meeting reports, personal profiles of eminent cell biologists, career advice, literature alerts, a meetings calendar and reviews of new books, software and CD-ROMs. Most articles in Trends in Cell Biology are commissioned, and all are subject to stringent peer and editorial review, ensuring balance, accuracy and a lively, fluent style. The topics covered are selected by the Editor and Editorial Board to reflect the most interesting recent developments. Trends in Cell Biology's readers use the journal to keep up with the recent progress in their own and related fields, and as a valuable resource for teaching.

    M.S. and Ph.D. DEGREE PROGRAM
The Department of Biomedical Sciences is dedicated to excellence in research, teaching and other scholarly activities, and it fosters interactions and collaborations among faculty and students in a wide range of disciplines and departments. The graduate program in Biomedical Sciences currently includes 16 postdoctoral students, 34 Ph.D. students and 79 M.S. students. Many are supported by training grants from the National Institutes of Health and the USDA Animal Biotechnology Training Program, or funds from four special endowments established to support graduate education in selected areas. Students are also supported from extramural or intramural research funds, or teaching assistantships. Some students are self-supporting, although this approach to graduate study typically is discouraged. Postdoctoral students usually spend 2 to 3 years with a mentor in the department, although most interact with three or more faculty and acquire a number of research skills. Students studying for a Ph.D. typically require 4 or 5 years after obtaining a B.S. degree.
