Novel Copper Containing Biomaterial Discovered in Jaws of Bloodworm MCDB Professor Herbert Waite and coworkers reported in the October 11 issue of Science on a marine organism that uses a unique copper-containing structure with unusual material properties. They found that the jaws of the marine bloodworm Glycera dibranchiata contain the copper-based biomineral atacamite [Cu 2 (OH)3 Cl ] that is bound to a histidine rich protein matrix. This discovery is remarkable because the amount of copper present would normally be toxic. The authors comment, "The marriage of protein with copper mineral as well as with bound copper ions is an intriguing concept per se but may also serve as a design prototype for new materials that need to be hard, lightweight, and durable." Researchers in the Developmental Biology Program study the mechanisms that control development from the single cell of the egg to the adult animal. A variety of experimental tools are used, including genetics, cell biology and biochemistry, in order to address complex questions of pattern formation, organogenesis and morphogenesis in the context of the whole animals. Drosophila, mouse, and chick embryos are all studied, according to which animal is the most appropriate for the questions asked. Developmental Genetics
Many key regulators of development have been identified in genetic screens. Researchers at SKI are using forward genetics in both Drosophila and the mouse to characterize more of the genes and processes that control patterning, morphogenesis and cell type determination during development.

    CDB is an international institute directed by Masatoshi Takeichi, and promotes experimental studies in various fields of developmental biology including embryology, developmental cell biology, neural developmental biology, stem cell and tissue regeneration research, evolutional biology, and post-genome project research with the aim at creating new paradigms in these disciplines. Equal emphasis will be placed on basic research for developing advanced cell and tissue engineering to bring about breakthroughs in the medical fields.
