Cell, Molecular, and Developmental Biology Resources Faculty Members Seminars Courses Graduate Students The Graduate Program in Cell, Molecular, and Developmental Biology offers a combination of laboratory research, journal clubs, research forums, and didactic courses to help students develop the analytical, technical, and communication skills necessary for productive careers in the biomedical sciences.
A broad range of molecular, cellular, and biochemical approaches are used in the laboratories of program faculty. These include gene cloning, gene microarray analysis, transgenic and knock-out mice, gene silencing, cell culture, monoclonal antibody production, radioimmunoassay, immunocytochemistry and immunoelectron microscopy, video confocal microscopy, and computer-based image analysis.

Membership in the Developemntal Biology Program is currently at 200 and includes researchers, postdoctoral fellows, graduate students, technicians and support personal throughout Vanderbilt's campus. Program members utilize many different approaches in their attempt to answer developmental questions based on their particular field of study. This 'mixing pot' of scientific disciplines has given our members the freedom to adopt an interspecies approach to their research. Some of the fundamental questions addressed by the researchers in our program are: How is the basic body plan of an embryo established? What are the factors that drive embryonic morphogenesis? How is a heart formed? How do neurons choose synaptic partners?

The Developmental Biology Graduate Program provides students with fundamental interdisciplinary training in modern developmental biology and genetics, emphasizing cellular and molecular aspects as well as tissue interactions. Faculty members are from nine basic science and clinical departments and study a wide range of organisms from the fruit fly (see figure above) to humans. Students are encouraged to obtain in-depth training in developmental biology, cell biology, molecular biology, biochemistry and genetics. The program also offers the opportunity for training in biomedical sciences, including gross anatomy, histology, and physiology. Thus, the program prepares students to compete for job opportunities in traditional medical and dental school departments as well as a productive research career in either the academia or industry. In the Division of Cell and Developmental Biology, we study how the differentiation of cells and tissues into functional organs and organisms is determined and maintained. Our research projects address the integration of subcellular processes into higher order multicellular organisation, from cell signalling processes that determine developmental morphogenesis to the mechanisms by which structural proteins maintain and facilitate complex tissue function. Understanding how molecular biology determines tissue structure and whole body function is the basic issue facing post-genomic biology, and it lies at the heart of understanding the molecular basis of human disease.

Originating in embryology , today developmental biology studies the genetic control of cell growth differentiation and specialization into tissues and organs Often used model organisms for developmental biology are the round worm Caenorhabditis elegans , the fruit fly Drosophila melanogaster , the zebrafish Brachydanio rerio , the African clawed toed frog Xenopus laevis and the weed arabidopsis Arabidopsis thaliana The findings of developmental biology can help to understand (or some day, cure) developmental malfunctions such as chromosomal aberration , for example, Down syndrome . An understanding of the specialization of stem cells to specific tissues and organs could lead to the specific cloning of organs for medical purposes.
