Taking up most of the issue is Robert Fischman's thoroughly informative article on the National Wildlife Refuge System. Professor Fischman traces the historical development of the Refuge System from inception to the present in a fascinating study of how the federal government has chosen (or not chosen) to protect nature. Rounding out the issue is David Roe's frightening account of the coming wave of toxic chemcials. Professor Roe has outlined the vast number of new toxic chemicals coming down the pike and assesses the ability of the existing regulatory structure to handle this infusion of new chemicals. North Bay Campus - Santa Rosa
    Program in Culture, Ecology and Sustainable Community
    Bachelor of Arts Degree Completion Program

    In 1998, New College of California established its North Bay Campus Center for the Study of Culture, Ecology, and Sustainable Community in Santa Rosa. The campus offers Bachelor and Master of Arts Degrees with an emphasis in Culture, Ecology, and Sustainable Community.
    We strive to meet this mission by teaching students the understandings and skills to:
    • Overcome alienation and heal both people and the Earth;
    • Resist further destruction of people and planet;
    • Build sustainable, alternative ways of living in areas such as economics, agriculture, education, technology, health, community, etc.;
    • Create a shift in the culture’s consciousness to a more holistic, ecological paradigm;
    • Build community in an increasingly isolating and individualizing culture.

    Ecology Software Server
    This site continues to develop as a clearinghouse for wildlife ecology related software. All software has been virus scanned. Contents of this site are listed in the subject index . The majority of this software is PC based (DOS and Microsoft Windows programs) and often requires pkunzip to extract. We have found several Mac software packages; a very few Mac users may require 'UnStuffit' or 'BinHex' to get at them. Some programming language code is available including programs accompanying textbooks. Most code was written for PC based platforms, but some may be compiled on other platforms. We solicit programs within the following categories for inclusion at this site: habitat analysis, diversity indices, simulation, general population dynamics, capture/recapture, survival, energetics, statistics, home range, telemetry, data collection, etc. To submit software , send the contribution to the site administrator as an e-mail attachment or through postal mail (addresses below). As this site grows it becomes difficult to know if we are maintaining current versions of software. Contributors are encouraged to contact us if if they find dated versions of their software being distributed. Software found here has been (or should have been) obtained with permission from the programmer or the administrator of the site from where it was copied. Please contact this site's administrator if you feel software is being distributed without appropriate consent. In our attempt to be comprehensive and better serve the user community, links to commercial software packages have been included among these pages. Decisions to include commercial links are based solely on the relevance of the software product to the theme of this site.
