SIGNIFICANCE AND STATUS OF EXOBIOLOGY A paper presented at the annual meeting of A.I.B.S., Boulder, Colorado, on August 26, 1964 GILBERT V. LEVIN Hazleton Laboratories, Inc., Falls Church, Virginia ABSTRACT Although there are no direct data on extraterrestrial life, planetary observations and statistical considerations support the possibility of such life. The significance of the questions the “science” of exobiology may answer warrants its active pursuit. These questions range from whether life exists elsewhere to fundamental inquiries in all the sciences. The title of this paper, “Significance and Status of Exobiology,” has been carefully selected. The significance of the term “exobiology” is in dispute and there are those who declare that the subject has no status . The term is of recent origin and is intended to denote the study of extraterrestrial life. The argument arises not only from those normally protesting the adulteration of the English language with newly-coined words but from those who literally interpret the prefix “exo” as meaning “out of, outside, or outer layer.” Some contend that a better term would be “xenobiology” in that the prefix “xeno” connotes “strange or foreign.” Others feel that “biology” is sufficient, for it would encompass extraterrestrial creatures. These arguments may have semantic merit, but “exobiology” has been adopted by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration and is now a part of the literature. A dispute over nomenclature should not discourage biologists from pursuing the subject.

    Xenobiology
(Redirected from Exobiology Xenobiology (or exobiology , or astrobiology ) is the term for a speculative field within biology which considers the possibility of, and possible nature of, extraterrestrial life . It also necessarily includes the concept of artificial life , since any life form might naturally evolve elsewhere, could conceivably come out of a laboratory using a future technology. It might be difficult to tell whether a truly strange life form had in fact arisen in space, or was designed much nearer to home. Although this is currently a speculative field, the absence of life in the rest of the Universe is a falsifiable hypothesis (though it is yet to be proven false), making Xenobiology a valid field for

Extreme Environments on Earth Analogs for exobiology Faculty Baross,Delaney, Deming, Frederickson, Gammon, Leigh, Rodrigo, Staley.
    http://www.astro.washington.edu/astrobio/extreme.html
Extreme Environments on Earth: Analogs for Exobiology Faculty: Baross, Delaney, Deming, Frederickson, Gammon, Leigh, Rodrigo, Staley Background Our basic premise is that life on Earth is the best model we have for life elsewhere. Life here is extraordinarily adaptable: organisms thrive in extremes of temperature, pressure, pH, solute concentrations, dryness, ionizing radiation, and other conditions. Study of life in extreme environments on Earth guides the search for extraterrestrial life. We study Earth's "extremophiles", organisms (especially microbes) that live in the most extreme conditions, both to identify the extreme limits of Earth-like life, and to learn to identify the types and activities of those life forms. Starting Assumptions and General Hypotheses
    • Liquid Water Assuming water is required for organisms' activity and growth, limits of microbial life can largely be defined by the boundary conditions for liquid water. Salinity and hydrostatic pressure determine phase changes: different combinations can expand the "liquid" boundaries substantially, especially at high temperatures.
    • Temperature, Pressure, and Minerals
