Research
We study the effects of environmental pollutants on developing organisms. The main focus of the laboratory is on the effects of pollutants on the early embryo, in general, with an additional emphasis on the effects of pollutants on the nervous system throughout the embryonic period. Since we are studying environmentally relevant chemicals, we are interested in both animals exposed in the wild, generally to a mixture of environmental pollutants, and laboratory models exposed under controlled laboratory conditions in order to verify the field results and in order to better characterize the underlying mechanisms.
Major Research Areas
  • Evaluation of the effects of dioxins (and other environmentally-related pollutants) on early embryonic avian development. These projects entail both general microscopic evaluation and analysis as well as immunohistochemical and histochemical techniques to evaluate biochemical and/or molecular changes induced by dioxin exposure.
  • Evaluation of the effects of dioxins (and related chemicals) on avian behavior (in laboratory conditions). This project entails exposing avian embryos to dioxins throughout embryonic development and analyzing behavioral changes in the hatchlings. A range of behavioral techniques are used to assess a range of potentially effected behaviors.

The Graduate Program in Neurobiology and Behavior provides incoming graduate students with the unique opportunity to explore neurobiology and behavior at the biophysical, molecular, cellular, neural network, neuroethological, or societal level. Whether you are interested in ion channel function, neural development, synaptic transmission, sensory systems, neural networks, animal behavior, animal societies, or chemical ecology, we have individualized programs of study to reflect your research interests. We also offer a large number of laboratory courses that offer incoming students the chance to approach interesting questions in neurobiology and behavior with a powerful set of experimental tools.

    30. Graduate Program In Neurobiology And Behavior At The University Of Washington

    http://depts.washington.edu/behneuro/
Understanding the brain represents both a major scientific challenge and a wonderful research opportunity. Investigations into the mechanisms of neural function require an interdisciplinary approach using the knowledge base and techniques of anatomy, biochemistry and molecular biology, physiology, pharmacology, and the behavioral sciences. Neuroscientists and their students must use these different approaches in their research and training if they are to make inroads into solving the major questions in neuroscience. Visiting Faculty Fellows ... Mentor Fellow Info T he Sloan-Swartz Center for Theoretical Neurobiology at UC San Francisco was formed in 1994 with the goal of providing an environment where young scientists with strong backgrounds in theory would receive training in experimental neuroscience research. Our goal is to create a new generation of neuroscientists who have a firm grasp of the basic principles of theory in the physical sciences and, at the same time, a firm grounding in the basic principles and approaches of experimental neuroscience. We expect that these young scientists will develop mature research programs that combine experimental and theoretical approaches to understanding the operation of the intact brain and that the combined theoretical/experimental training they have received will enable them to make breakthroughs that would not have been possible by either experimental or theoretical approaches alone.
