Did you hear the one about the prefrontal cortex?
Brain scans reveal the inner workings of humour.
26 February 2001 TOM CLARKE Bursting the bubble: why do we laugh? Different parts of the brain are involved in 'getting' different types of jokes, a study of chuckling volunteers reveals. But when it comes to appreciating a gag, the pleasurable feelings associated with humour all arise in the same place Using a technique called functional magnetic resonance imaging, Vinod Goel and Raymond Dolan of the Institute of Neurology in London scanned the brains of people listening to various jokes. Semantic jokes seem to activate the region of the brain that processes word meaning, called the posterior temporal lobe. Puns, on the other hand, appear to tickle areas that help to process sounds, known as the left inferior prefrontal cortex and insula. But when it comes to responding to a joke of either type, by chuckling or simply feeling inwardly amused, a different brain region appears to swing into action: the median ventral prefrontal cortex. So although getting jokes might be specific to different regions, responding to them happens in the same place. "Irrespective of the kind of joke," says Dolan, "it's the same system that's being accessed."

The Mind-BODY Connection:
Granny Was Right, After All
Can your mental state influence your susceptibility to disease? Much of the scientific evidence that this is so has been coming out of the University Medical Center department headed by neurobiologist David Felten. Benefiting, he says, "simply from being in the right field at the right time," MacArthur "genius grant" winner David Felten has become one of the leading researchers in the emerging field of mind-body medicine. If you color outside the lines, you'll have a lot of people trying to break your Crayolas. When you're the first with something, it's not easy getting other people to take you seriously." Sporting a jaunty seasonal tie (Warner Brothers 'toons) and seated on his office sofa alongside a companionable (and life-sized) stuffed wolf, neurobiologist David Felten is talking about his work. "Our grandmothers knew all along that our minds and our bodies were connected, even if the scientific community didn't. We've simply provided irrefutable data showing that it's true." Blame it on Descartes that the scientific community has for centuries been contradicting Granny on the matter of an anatomical link between the physical and the psychological.

I Introduction:
Human nervous systems display an impressive roster of complex capacities, including the following: perceiving, learning and remembering, planning, deciding, performing actions, as well as the capacities to be awake, fall asleep, dream, pay attention, and be aware. Although neuroscience has advanced spectacularly in this century, we still do not understand in satisfying detail how any capacity in the list emerges from networks of neurons. We do not completely understand how humans can be conscious, but neither do we understand how they can walk, run, climb trees or pole vault. Nor, when one stands back from it all, is awareness intrinsically more mysterious than motor control. Balanced against the disappointment that full understanding eludes us still, is cautious optimism, based chiefly on the nature of the progress behind us. For cognitive neuroscience has already passed well beyond what skeptical philosophers once considered possible, and continuing progress seems likely. In assuming that neuroscience can reveal the physical mechanisms subserving psychological functions, I am assuming that it is indeed the brain that performs those functions that capacities of the humans mind are in fact capacities of the human brain. This assumption and its corollary rejection of Cartesian souls or spirits or "spooky stuff" existing separately from the brain is no whimsy. On the contrary, it is a highly probable hypothesis, based on evidence currently available from physics, chemistry, neuroscience and evolutionary biology. In saying that physicalism is an hypothesis, I mean to emphasize its status as an empirical matter. I do not assume that it is a question of conceptual analysis, a priori insight, or religious faith, though I appreciate that not all philosophers are at one with me on this point.

AIMS AND SCOPE
Critical Reviews TM in Neurobiology presents up-to-date information from pertinent neurobiological disciplines with relevance to basic neuroscience, clinical neurobiology, and psychiatric considerations. Developmental neurobiology and the neurobiology of the aging are included. The journal integrates wide-ranging, often contradictory literature in a focused manner. Articles satisfy the needs of basic neuroscience researchers, as well as allowing clinicians to keep abreast of the scientific basis of neurology and allied medical areas. The Journal provides a means of placing basic science information into clinical perspective, speaking directly to the issues that have become prominent during the past decade.

The Neurobiology Research Unit (NRU) is the primary center for neurobiological research at Rigshospitalet , Copenhagen University Hospital, and at the Faculty of Medicine, University of Copenhagen . Residing in the beautiful villa you see in the photo below, NRU houses more than 20 researchers and other personnel. NRU's research activities include cerebral circulation, studies of functional activation of the brain, cerebral metabolism, the blood-brain barrier, and neuroreceptors. The research comprises clinical as well as experimental work and uses SPECT (Single Photon Emission Computed Tomography), PET (Positron Emission Tomography), MR (magnetic resonance) as well as other methods. NRU has an extensive collaboration with other institutes in Denmark, in other European countries, as well as overseas. NRU is supported by both national and international grants. NRU is one of the partners in the interdiciplinary brain research framework Copenhagen Brain Research Center (CBRC) established in the Copenhagen area.
