Was ist Theoretische Biologie?

What is Theoretical Biology?
The aim of theoretical biology is to unveil general principles in the vast multitude of biological phenomena. Theoretical biology is the original and comprehensive term, but other names such as systems biology, integrative biology, and bioinformatics are also used, in particular to highlight special applications. Theoretical biology is inherently interdisciplinary and linked to many related fields, e.g., artificial life, complex adaptive systems, mathematical modelling, kybernetics, informatics, to name a few. It must be emphasised that theoretical biology differs from theoretical physics in that (i) it emphasises the rational treatment of diversity and complexity; (ii) it tries to combine holistic ideas with the modelling approach; and (iii) the number of relevant facts that must be taken into account is very large. Its main role can be summarized in the words of the Nobel laureate Sir Peter Medawar: "No new principle will declare itself from beneath a heap of facts." (A good recent example of this is the need to interpret the results to be expected from the Human Genome Project.) It is timely to distil from the avalanche of observations whatever general principles can be discerned. Introduction UNDER CONSTRUCTION TOP Books

http://www.math.ucdavis.edu/~mogilner/Gordon.html
took place in Tilton, New Hampshire, from June 9 to June 14, 2002.
The program of the conference can be downloaded here: program in pdf format A report of the co-chairs:
The overarching theme was complex networks; the talks ranged from genes to ecosystems. About 100 participants gathered in the informal setting of a boarding school in Tilton to discuss current research topics in phylogenetic trees, visual cortex, Parkinson disease, chemotaxis, morphogenesis, global environmental changes, gene regulation networks, and transcriptional regulation. The conference concluded with a discussion of computational biology in a changing scientific culture. The speakers were a mix of junior and senior scientists, which is typical of Gordon Research Conferences.
The form of Gordon Research Conferences is very conducive to informal discussions among participants. GRC does not allow any recordings of the talks or dissemination of results through conference proceedings or other reports, which encourages speakers to discuss unpublished research and provocative hypotheses. Talks are held in the mornings and after dinner; afternoons are free and used for informal sessions and one-on-one discussions. A large number of posters were presented that resulted in lively discussions among the participants. In addition, canoeing trips, hiking, and excellent food facilitated scientific exchange.
Reflecting recent trends, many sessions and talks were devoted to explosively growing areas of bioinformatics, genomics, proteomics (and other –tics and –mics), such as phylogenetic trees, gene and transcriptional regulation networks, and computational biology in general. These sessions highlighted the importance of ‘discrete mathematics’ (as compared to traditional methods of analysis and differential equations).

Theoretical Biology
Biological systems, and especially ecological ones, are often very complex and with parts operating on greatly different time scales. The complexity and size of the systems makes it very time-consuming and difficult (sometimes more or less impossible) to performe controlled experiments. An alternative (complement) is to formulate mathematical models of the systems and performe high precision computations and simulations using high performance computer systems. The study of the relationship between the structure and dynamics of complex ecological systems can benefit immensely from contributions from applied mathematics and computational science. Our main subjects of research are:
  • Food-webs (Dynamics and stability of complex ecological systems: vulnerability and sensitivity analysis of model ecosystems)
  • Landscape ecology (Population dynamics in a heterogeneous landscape: Crop management strategies for effective biological control)
  • Life-history strategies (Life-history strategies and the risk of population extinction in a variable environment: sensitivity analysis)
  • Population dynamics (Dynamics and stability of size-structured populations; Biological dynamical systems: properties of growth)"

    Introduction
We design unifying frameworks as well as mathematical tools, for studying evolutionary and ecological problems. This is done on an a priori basis and in close co-operation with experimental groups. Our research ranges from exploring the consequences of established biological theories to the construction of models for specific biological systems, the latter often with a view to develop data-analytical techniques.
