Theoretical Biology I.ÊIntroduction II.ÊScientific Structure of the Project The problems dealt with belonged to the following categories:
  • Dynamics (spatial and temporal) of populations in ecology and evolution. Individual and population genetics. Selfish genetic elements and intragenomic conflict. Early molecular evolution. Basic and philosophical aspects of evolution.
  • We maintained coherence by tackling these problems on the basis of the following conditions: ¥ Group members used the same mathematical armamentarium: the models and theorems of population biology. This served as a powerful common language; ¥ The questions considered did not have an obvious answer in Darwinian theory: the solutions turned out to be somewhat counterintuitive Ð "tricky" Ð but related to each other; ¥ Many, but not all, group members were, directly or indirectly, influenced by the Sussex School of theoretical biology, whose most prominent figure is John Maynard Smith. Therefore there was a tendency to aim at minimal models combined with philosophical insight and clarity. This style of thought was an important "common denominator". 1.ÊDynamics of Populations in Ecology and Evolution

    Focus Group on Theoretical Biology
The focus group, convened by Permanent Fellow Eörs Szathmáry, is a wide-ranging international team which will address important issues in theoretical biology, primarily evolution. The topics to be considered include: The Third Day: A Synthetic Approach to the Origin of Life A biologist and a chemist in the field will join forces to produce an accessible, yet authoritative survey of this fascinating problem. The Origin of Chromosomes One of the first major transitions in evolution was the origin of chromosomes from unlinked genes. Modelling will reveal the selective forces that could have driven this crucial step. Life on Mars Hypothetical explanation for spot dynamics on circumpolar dark dunes of Mars. Analysis of images provided by the Mars Global Surveyor reveals strongly suggestive evidence for active life processes on the Martian surface. A detailed mechanism of the life-cycle of putative surface organisms is being worked out. Evolution of the Genetic Code: Patterns and Processes The genetic code is statistically far from being a ³frozen accident²: amino acids with similar codons are biosynthetically and/or physicochemically related. Further theoretical work must link the observational data to plausible scenarios for the origin of the genetic code.

    Theoretical biology
Modern biology is largely reductionistic, which means
    • the reduction of biology as a science to physics and chemistry, which has not yet been accomplished in reality, life is reduced to complex chemical and physical processes, and a living being is reduced to a complex aggregation of countless molecules.
Life is mostly seen as a complicated molecular phenomenon revolving around the axis of the miraculous molecule of DNA. Through such treatment, a living being as a whole loses its autonomy, which is clearly seen from the very prevalent selfish gene paradigm (see the World of Dawkins, Selfish Gene However, this is not the only possible and scientifically acceptable view of life. There is a challenging alternative, namely its organistic ( structuralistic ) concept. It may be understood as a theoretical framework that treats processes and structural elements in living organisms as an emergent entity with new qualities that are irreducible to its structural elements - a whole. This whole is seen as possessing properties and laws, which are impossible to derive or foretell just from knowing the properties and laws of its partial or elementary processes and structural elements. The organismic whole is thus autonomous. See Goodwin About genes ultraweak ). There are other research fields that prove a long range order in organisms, as for instance discovery of bands of colors when the living organism is exposed to polarized light in an unconventionally used polarization microscope, discovered by Mae Wan Ho.

    • Theoretical Biology - The Estonian school in theoretical biology as a tradition of holistic, developmental and constructivist ideas in general biology goes back to K.F.Burdach, one who coined the term biology in 1800, and his pupil, a greatest biologist of the 19th century Karl Ernst von Baer. Among their followers can be named G.Teichmüller, G.Bunge, Jakob von Uexküll, E.Oldekop and many others.

Thermodynamics of Aging G.P.Gladyshev Semenov Institute of Chemical Physics, Russian Academy of Sciences, ul. Kosygina, 4, Moscow, 117977 Russia Received October 14, 1997 Abstract
    THERMODYNAMIC THEORY OF AGING
There are many theories of aging, most of which deal with the process mechanism. These theories concentrate on the kinetics (dynamics) of the phenomenon. As a rule, each of them focuses on changes in organisms that accompany aging. It is clear that, in general, these changes cannot be considered the cause (driving force) of aging. These kinetic theories have been extensively discussed (Advances ..., 1996; Klatz and Goldman, 1996; The Science ..., 1996; The Yearbook ..., 1997). Another group of theories deals with the kinetic-thermodynamic aspects of ontogenesis. Most of these theories use models that consider the changes in entropy production during aging (Lee and Hershey, 1990), which are based on the works of I.Prigogine and his coworkers. These theories consider the rates of heat production by living beings. However, in this case, the heat effects characterize the intensity of biochemical processes and are only indirectly related to the alteration (aging) of the proper structure of the biological system. One should also bear in mind that changes in the entropy of an open system are, of course, related to not only the heat effects of the processes, but also to exchange of matter and energy with the environment, which makes it difficult to calculate the changes in thermodynamic functions of the systems (Denbigh, 1989).

    About this theme
The potential of the mathematical sciences to make a fundamental contribution to our understanding of biological systems cannot be underestimated. Mathematical, computational and statistical techniques provide key tools for analysing experimental data, making predictions from the data and for posing questions which can guide future research efforts. However, to be valuable, the theoretical approach offered by mathematical studies must be fully integrated within interdisciplinary/ multidisciplinary projects. Applications are invited in which contemporary methods in the mathematical sciences are being applied to novel, timely and significant biological problems; in some cases this may focus on the development of new mathematical techniques motivated by the biology. Genuine collaborations between Theoreticians and Experimentalists/Field Workers should be explicitly detailed. In general, the biological priorities must be those set out in the portfolios of the research committees.

    Theoretical Biology
Biology, in the course of its history, has changed from a more descriptive to a really analytical field of research. Such complex constructs of ideas and knowledge have been developed that a division between experimental and theoretical research as well as interdisciplinary co-operation (e.g. with physics, chemistry, biochemistry, medicine, mathematics, etc.) have become necessary. Nevertheless, theoretical biology in Germany has not yet been institutionalised as an independent field. This innovative research college intends to overcome this deficiency and aims to establish "Theoretical Biology" at Humboldt-University.
Based on evolution-theoretical concepts, priority is put on the following areas of research:
    1. Evolution and adaptation of molecular, genetic, and cellular model systems,
    2. Organismic evolution theory,
    3. Functional structures of neuronal systems.
Along with research, this college also takes its part in teaching. It offers subject-related lectures together with complementary exercises, seminars and a basic lecture on "Mathematics for Biologists". Participating Departments of Humboldt-University Berlin:
    Spokesperson:
    Prof. Dr. Bernd Ronacher

    Course Description:
Lectures, assigned reading and problem sets will first address mathematical prerequisites for studying species diversity: expected rarity, equitability, diversity decomposition, scaling, and the dynamics of community diversity. The second section addresses models for interactions of diversity, stability, and resilience. The course meets Tuesday evenings, from 6:30 to 8:30 PM. Grading is S/U; a grade of satisfactory (and 2 cr hrs) is earned by completing a sufficient number of problem sets.
