Efficient processing and analysis of this information presents a challenge for the twenty-first century.
Progress in biological and medical research will lead to a vast accumulation of data in the coming years. The sensible scientific application of this flood of data presents one of the greatest challenges for research in the twenty-first century. The new discipline of bioinformatics must, above all, be further developed to provide evolutionary connections and indications of biological functions as well as to make complex biological processes in computer models comprehensible and even predictable. This indicates a change of paradigm in biomedicine, from one of experimental analysis to one of theoretical interpretation of acquired data; physics has already long undergone this change to a great extent. In addition to these changes, automation of analysis methods for acquiring gene functions or higher brain activities will continue to increase in significance.

History [of theoretical biology]. The first steps towards a theory of biological form were already taken in Greek times with attempts - notably by Aristotle - to classify biological organisms and to understand their growth. By the 1600s extensive classification had been done, and many structural features had been identified as in common between different organisms. But despite hopes on the part of René Descartes Galileo and others that biological processes might follow the same kind of rigid clockwork rules that were beginning to emerge in physics, no general principles were forthcoming. Rough analogies between the forms and functions of biological and non-biological systems were fairly common among both artists and scientists, but were rarely thought to have much scientific significance. In the 1800s more detailed analogies began to emerge, sometimes as offshoots of the field of morphology named by Johann Goethe , and sometimes with mathematical interpretations, and in 1917 D’Arcy Thompson published the first edition of his book On Growth and Form which used mathematical methods - mostly from analytical geometry - to discuss a variety of biological processes, usually in analogy with ones in physics. But emphasis on evolutionary rather than mechanistic explanations for a long time caused little further work to be done along these lines. Much additional data was obtained, particularly in embryology, and by the 1930s it seemed fairly clear that at least some aspects of growth in the embryo were controlled by chemical messengers. Joe: That's what everybody wants to know. Heist I study theoretical evolutionary biology: How and why populations change over time, what mechanisms are at work, and how evolution can be explained and understood rigorously (that is, with both mathematical and with experimental rigor).
Why Evolution Matters
I'd like to say that I'm frequently asked the question, "So, why does evolution matter?" In fact, when people ask what I do and I tell them, a much more frequent response is a sudden change in expression, either to careful neutrality or to the kind of bemused and fascinated expression you might give to a child who's just introduced you to his imaginary friend Herman the Cloud-Lizard. The question of why evolution matters, how knowledge of evolution and its mechanisms can create good, is important and worth asking. So, why does evolution matter? My answer comes in three parts.

It is also available from Elsevier's web site Abstract : This paper offers a short review of Pattee's main contributions to science and philosophy. With no intention of being exhaustive, an account of Pattee's work is presented which discusses some of his ideas and their reception. This is done through an analysis centered in what is thought to be his main contribution: the elaboration of an internal epistemic stance to better understand life, evolution and complexity. Having introduced this core idea as a sort of a posteriori cohesive element of a complex but highly coherent and complete system of thinking, further specific elements are also reviewed.
