Original limp card boards, covered in printed vellumized paper. An usually well preserved copy, of a notoriously fragile book. Published in the same year as the first edition. Edwin A. Abbott (1838-1926) was born in London, the son of the Headmaster of the Philological School, Marylebone. After a successful career at St. John's College, Cambridge, he married and became a minister. In 1864 he was elected Head Master of the City of London School, and served brilliantly for twenty-five years. It was due to his influence, that the study of great English Literature became an integral part of educational programs. He was one of the greatest teachers of his era. He became well known as a Bacon scholar, and occasionally became embroiled in the Shakespeare-Bacon controversy. It is interesting to note that the fine article on Abbott in the DNB does not even mention 'Flatland' - perhaps because it was both pseudonymous and most unusual, and thus somewhat inconvenient to associate with its author. Not incidentally, 'Flatland' is also full of humorous satires on class, bureaucracy, and society in Victorian England. In recent years, Abbott's witty view of class conflict and women's roles in society have gotten much attention - especially interesting are his descriptions of women's language versus men's language.

Het lijkt een vlijmscherpe, wrange, onthullende maatschappijkritische satire zeer kunstig verpakt in een zorgvuldig uitgewerkte metafoor, vergelijkbaar met Candide van Voltaire, Gargantua en Pantagruel van Rabelais en Gullivers Reizen van Swift. Maar het is meer! Beschrijft een gewone satire wantoestanden in de maatschappij, klassentegenstellingen, machtswellust, leugen en bedrog, uitbuiting, de kloof tussen arm en rijk, ijdelheid en kortzichtigheid, de schrijvers verzanden allemaal in cynisme omdat ze geen uitweg uit het tranendal zien, geen eschatologie hebben. Hoe anders is en hoe hoopvol is dit Evangelie van de Drie Dimensies! Dat is de boodschap en de profetische strekking van Platland. Those words appear near the beginning of the 15th chapter of a remarkable book titled Flatland: A Romance of Many Dimensions. Written in 1884 by Edwin A. Abbott (1838-1926), this slim volume has long served as a doorway to the fourth dimension and beyond for many explorers of geometry. The book's central figure and narrator, "A Square," takes visitors into a two-dimensional world where a race of rigid geometric forms live and love, work and play. Like shadows, the denizens of Flatland freely flit about on the surface of their world but lack the power to rise above or sink into it. All Flatland's inhabitantsstraight lines, triangles, squares, pentagons, and other figuresare trapped in their planar geometry. On the surface, Abbott's narrative appears to be simply an entertaining tale and a clever mathematics lesson.
