Date: Tuesday 09 April 2002 - Time: 15:04:01 (Permanent Link) Now Playing: Moody Blues - A Night At Red Rock Today I came across a site I've not visited in a year or so, and I'm gald to say that they still seem to be doing fantastic work. The site in question is Project Gutenberg Flatland: a romance of many dimensions by Abbott, Edwin Abbott, 1838-1926) so I downloaded it to read when I get a chance. I urge anyone reading this to have a wander over to the PG site and take a look through the books and texts available, it's a great resource, and the more people get to know about it the better (so tell your friends!) Yield to temptation; it may not pass your way again.

"ALICE in Wonderland" remains a classic not only because of the whimsical adventures of a delightful little girl, but also because of the fantastical twists the reader encounters. (think of the Mad Hatter's riddles, and the now-you-see-it-now-you-don't Cheshire cat's grin). What is little known, however, is that Lewis Carroll is actually Edward Dodgson, a cleric-mathematician whose passions for puzzles and games have led him to pen other less-known but no less well-written books such as "Tanglewood Tales."
Now thanks to Rizaldy Scott (of the Karolimska Institutet in Sweden), during our semestral break, I read through Edwin A. Abbott's "Flatland" and was similarly entertained and amazed. Like Carroll, Abbott (1838-1926) was also an English clergyman, but he was also a Shakespearean scholar. The latter interest is evident in those pages of this slim book (for instance, doesn't the quote "One touch of Nature makes all worlds akin" remind us of the Bard?).
But what is most remarkable is Abbott's successful portrayal of the dimensions of space (at this point, Einstein's conception of space-time would still be 50 years into the future). The main character, a mathematician named A. Square, lives in two-dimensional flatland (think of a plane stretching to infinity along its length and width). Add social commentary to the mix Abbott satirizes the divisions of his time by describing the inhabitants of Flatland as either shapes or lines. The males are shapes (which have any number of sides, depending on their social status) while the females are the lowly lines. The priests are perfect shapes circles, while as you may have guessed by now, irregular figures are outcasts.
