Flatland: a romance of many dimensions

The author works to expand the readers understanding of space time and dimension by rigorously examining the way in which creatures of lesser dimension would explore their world. One example of this exploration is contained in the observations that a two-dimensional square makes about a one-dimensional line: It seemed that this poor ignorant Monarch as he called himself was persuaded that the Straight Line which he called his Kingdom, and in which he passed his existence, constituted the whole of the world, and indeed the whole of Space. Not being able either to move or to see, save in his Straight Line, he had no conception of anything out of it.
It should be noted that, written in a time when popular belief held to many stereotypes and biases against women, the book propagates as well as satirizes many of the biases and stereotypes of the time. Abstracted 11/01. (Author/AMS)

An Excellent Classic
Contrary to this silly form I am actully 14. I am an eighth grader and I read this for my Algebra 1 class. I fell in love with it instanly. The themes, ideas, and satires all intertwined create one of the best books ever written. The paralle of the unique twist between Euclidian and Non-Euclidian and the satire of Victorian England are wonderful. This book makes you both laugh-out-loud and cry, but most of all it makes you think. Edwin Abbot Abbot was not only a mathamatican but also a brillent liggest. His pros style makes the book all the better... BUY THIS BRILLENT BOOK
Flatland is boring
Flatland is for advanced students -seniors and up- who are participating in a physchological study class. This book warps your thinking about the geometric rules. Unfortunately, it is written in such a way that even if you are a very concentrated reader, you cannot read a paragraph withouth being distracted. The diction in this story is made to be boring. A teacher assigned freshmen students-in high school- to read this and everyone complained because it literally takes and hour to get through a couple of pages. You must also reread the text to find some sort of meaning. This book is not meant for anyone under 18 and is certainly not enjoyable for leisurely purposes.

A Stranger from Spaceland "It was the last day of the 1999th year of our era. The pattering of the rain had long ago announced nightfall; and I was sitting in the company of my wife, musing on the events of the past and the prospects of the coming year, the coming century, the coming Millennium." Those words appear near the beginning of the 15th chapter of a remarkable book titled Flatland: A Romance of Many Dimensions. Written in 1884 by Edwin A. Abbott (1838–1926), this slim volume has long served as a doorway to the fourth dimension and beyond for many explorers of geometry. The book’s central figure and narrator, "A Square," takes visitors into a two-dimensional world where a race of rigid geometric forms live and love, work and play. Like shadows, the denizens of Flatland freely flit about on the surface of their world but lack the power to rise above or sink below it. All Flatland’s inhabitants—straight lines, triangles, squares, pentagons, and other figures—are trapped in their planar geometry. On the surface, Abbott’s narrative appears to be simply an entertaining tale and a clever mathematics lesson. From Flatland’s beguiling text and quaint drawings, readers can begin to imagine the strictly limited vistas open to those trapped in a low-dimensional realm.

Abbott "I exist in the hope that these memoirs... may find their way to the minds of humanity in Some Dimension, and may stir up a race of rebels who shall refuse to be confined to limited Dimensionality." A perennial science-fiction classic that has entertained generations, Edwin Abbott's Flatland is also a fascinating experiment in expanding our ways of thinking and experiencing the world. This delightful allegorical tale, illustrated by the author, has profound implications about the limitations of our everyday perceptions, and makes a moving plea for openness and humility in the search for truth and spiritual growth. A perennial science-fiction classic.

Nothing that I can think of Full Review FLatland was written by Edwin A. Abbott (1838 - 1926) in 1884. The book is supposed to be the memoirs of A. Square, an inhabitant of Flatland. The first half of the book is a description of Flatland, and world that has only two dimensions and exists on a plane, and how life in two dimensions works. The second half is about the adventures of A. Square as he visits Lineland (which has only one dimension), Pointland (zero dimensions) and Sphereland (which has the three dimensions that we are used too). A. Square "writes" the book so that anybody who reads it may gain the understanding that there may exists universes with more or less dimensions than their own. The dedication of the book reads thus: "To

Autore Rudy Rucker, matematico della San José State University.
