His career as a famous writer started with History of the United States of America (1889-1991) after he had wrote two biographies, a first anonymous novel, and a second, Democracy, under a pseudonym in 1880. Deeply stunned after the suicide of his adored wife in 1885, Henry Adams began to travel both mentally and physically. The Education of Henry Adams, his best known work and one of the finest autobiographies, is describing his quest for mental peace in a turbulent world of exploding science and technology, and his failure to adapt to his contemporary life. This Author's titles If you wish further information about this author, please enter American Authors: Adams Cather Chopin Cooper ... Wharton Other Authors of Fiction genre: Austen Balzac Bronte Bronte ... Zola In 1919 Adams was posthumously awarded a Pulitzer Prize for the Education of Henry Adams.

Adams National Historic Site, Quincy, Massachusetts Henry Adams Caricature, 1904 Henry Adams (1838-1918) was a philosopher-historian, writer and relative of two presidents. He taught at Harvard University, then moved with his wife Marian Hooper Adams to Washington, D.C., in 1877. It was for Marian's gravesite that Adams commissioned Saint-Gaudens to create the Adams Memorial . Adams and his close friend John Hay built adjoining houses on Lafayette Square, designed by architect Henry H. Richardson. Saint-Gaudens visited Adams and Hay on his many trips to Washington between 1900 and 1904. In 1904 Saint-Gaudens made this caricature of Adams which symbolized the "outward gruffness and inner gentleness" of the historian. Both Hay and he referred to Adams as "Porcupinus Angelicus", or "Porcupinus Poeticus," and Adams is depicted on this medallion with wings above and porcupine quills below. Saint-Gaudens sent Hay, Secretary of State at the time, to deliver the caricature to Adams in Paris. It was sent like a diplomatic message, complete with couriers and seals.

    EDITOR'S NOTE
A few years ago, an anonymous novel of political satire titled Primary Colors was published to great fanfare and bestsellerdom. Only after publication was the author revealed to be a prominent Washington, D.C. newspaper reporter. Less well-known to today's public is the fact that Primary Colors had a distinguished predecessor more than a century earlier. Democracy: an American Novel appeared anonymously in 1880, and caused something of a sensation by its scathing satirical bite into the high-level politics of the Gilded Age. Only after his death in 1918 did his publisher reveal that the author was the prominent historian and writer Henry Adams. Eric Eldred, of Eldritch Press, to whom we are indebted for the preparation of this text, writes of Democracy: "Adams (1838-1918) remarked (ironically as usual), 'The wholesale piracy of Democracy was the single real triumph of my life.'it was very popular, as readers tried to guess who the author was and who the characters really were. Chapters XII and XIII were originally misnumbered. The edition in the Library of America (ISBN 0-940450-12-7) is standard. The New American Library paperback has a good introduction by Henry David Aiken, the only Harvard professor who did not go to Washington in the Kennedy administration." The power-hunger and shenanigans Adams skewered remain familiar to all of us, a lesson perhaps that things truly do not change much over time. The ironies of the novel seem as fresh today as they did upon its original publication, highlighted by the coincidence of the characters in the book including a Mr. Gore and Mr. and Mrs. Clinton.
