Strangers to Us All Lawyers and Poetry John Quincy Adams Massachusetts Library of Congress John Quincy Adams was the sixth President of the United States (1825-1829) and lifetime diarist. His father, John Adams , helped draft the Declaration of Independence and was the second President of the United States (1797-1801). John Quincy was born in Braintree (now Quincy), Massachusetts in 1767. His early education, in mathematics, languages, and the classics, was by way of his father. He graduated from Harvard College in 1787 and studied law in Newburyport, Massachusetts under the tutelage of Theophilus Parsons . In 1790 he began the practice of law in Boston. He was elected to the U.S. Senate in 1802, served in various diplomatic posts and was President James Monroe's Secretary of State (1817-1825), in the opinion of many, one of the best to ever serve in that post. Adams was an abolitionist and opposed slavery in the newly admitted states. After completing his Presidency, Adams served as a member of the U.S. House of Representatives from 1831 until his death in 1848. As a result, the accomplishments of his administration were meager indeed. At the end of his presidency, Adams declared, "the sun of my political life sets in deepest gloom." In fact, his sun was not even close to setting. Elected to the House of Representatives in 1830, he served there until his death. By then, he had been dubbed "Old Man Eloquent," and in his prolonged and successful struggle defending the antislavery movement's right to petition Congress, he had gained a circle of admirers that extended well beyond his Massachusetts constituency. When Adams sat for this portrait, he doubted that artist George Caleb Bingham could produce "a strong likeness." But Bingham did just that, and the portrait's sharp-edged vitality seems to echo Ralph Waldo Emerson's comment that the aging Adams was "like one of those old cardinals, who as quick as he is chosen Pope, throws away his crutches and his crookedness, and is as straight as a boy."

John Quincy Adams (1767-1848) Education and Occupations: Education: The Passey Academy (outside Paris) Attended Leyden University from 1781-1785 Advanced Placement student at Harvard University from 1785-1787 Studied law under Theophilus Parsons from 1787-1790 Occupations: John Quincy Adams was the Minister to the Netherlands from 1794-1797. He was the Minister to Prussia from 1797-1801. He acted as a Massachusetts State Senator in 1802. Adams was one of the Massachusetts U.S. Senators from 1803-1807. He was the Minister to Russia from 1809-1814. In 1814, Adams was appointed as the head of a five-man American council designated to negotiate a peace treaty with Great Britain that would end the War of 1812. He served as the Minister to Great Britain from 1815-1817. Appointed by President James Monroe, Adams served as the Secretary of State from 1817-1825. During his term, he secured the Convention of 1818, establishing U.S. fishing rights off of certain Canadian coasts; and he concluded the Adams-Onis Treaty, which transferred Southern Florida to the United States, fixed the southwestern boundary of the United States at the Sabine river, and removed Spanish claims to Oregon. Also, despite the advice of former presidents and other prominent figures to the contrary, Adams was a strong proponent of a unilateral declaration that would warn European nations not to interfere with the Western Hemisphere. Term of Presidency: 1825-1829 The major issues and events in the election of 1824: The two leading vote-getters' opposing personalities (John Quincy Adams had an aloof and formal manner which compared unfavorably to Andrew Jackson's down- home style) made the largest impact on the results of the election.

As a youth he traveled with his father to Europe, at fourteen years his father asked him to go with Francis Dana to Russia to be his secretary because he was more fluent in French, the language used in Russian government circles. When his father became minister to Great Britain, he returned to the United States to enter Harvard. His previous studies in Paris and the Netherlands enabled him to join the junior class at Harvard, he graduated in 1787, the second out of a class of fifty-one. President Washington had appointed John Quincy to be the ambassador to Portugal, but when his father became the second president, Presidents Washington and Adams had to reassign him.
