John Quincy Adams
John Quincy Adams was born in Braintree (now Quincy), Massachusetts, the son of John and Abigail Adams. He spent much of his youth in Europe where his father served on a variety of diplomatic missions. John Junior's intellectual abilities were recognized early in life and at the age of 15 he was named the secretary to the U.S. minister in Russia. He returned to America and graduated from Harvard College in 1788. He studied law and established his own practice in 1791. Adams began a distinguished diplomatic career by serving the Federalist presidents as the minister to the Netherlands and Prussia in the 1790s. In 1802, he was elected to the Massachusetts assembly, but left the following year to take a U.S. Senate seat. Elected originally as a Federalist, Adams broke with the party when he supported Jefferson’s Embargo of 1807. He went on to serve the Madison and Monroe administrations on a series of diplomatic assignments: minister to Russia from 1809 to 1814, peace negotiator at Ghent during the War of 1812 , and minister to Great Britain from 1815 to 1817.

    John Quincy Adams
John Quincy Adams (1767-1848) spent most of his youth and adult life in public service to the United States, as senator, diplomat, secretary of state, president, and congressman. He made his greatest contribution to his country after his presidency, while serving in the United States House of Representatives as a staunch opponent of slavery and expansionist war. The second of John and Abigail Adams's five children, Johnny was born in the North Precinct of Braintree, Massachusetts (later Quincy). His parents' home in Quincy remained his own home throughout his life, though he was often away for extended periods in Europe and Washington. He was strongly influenced by his fiercely dedicated and brilliant parents. At home, issues of government, politics, world affairs, literature, religion and morality were all considered immediate and pressing. "JQA," as he began early to identify himself, accompanied and assisted his father on diplomatic trips to Europe, 1778-85, serving, despite his youth, as secretary to Francis Dana and his father in negotiations with foreign countries. Abroad Johnny developed a love for the Greek and Roman classics. On returning to America, he was granted admission to Harvard College with advanced standing, based on his studies at the University of Leyden. Following graduation in 1787, Adams studied and briefly practiced law, but found it boring and depressing. Looking elsewhere for fulfillment, he was developing a reputation as an orator and as a newspaper essayist, author of "Letters of Publicola," a response to

Assignment With his strong political background, his amazing strength in attempting to achieve the best for his country, and his remarkable political notions, John Quincy Adams led a strong and influential life. He worked fervently everyday of his life to accomplish the unthinkable.
Son of John and Abigail Adams, John Quincy was literally "born into politics." His father was the former president of the United States. His mother was very informed of everything that was happening in the country due to influential friends. She encouraged her son to follow in his father's footsteps. During the Battle of Bunker Hill, she brought him atop Penn's Hill to see what was happening. Here she told him that he had to "get to the House of Commons." (Dodge) She also told him that he was responsible for his father's life.
This picture was taken as we were listening to a tour guide in the house in which John Quincy Adams grew up.

John Quincy Adams (1767-1848), was the first son of a president of the United States who also became President. Like his father, John Adams, he failed to win a second term. But soon afterward, he was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives. This pleased him more, he said, than his election as president.
Before entering the presidency, Adams held several important diplomatic posts. He took part in the negotiations that ended the War of 1812. As secretary of state, he helped develop the Monroe Doctrine. Quarrels within his party hampered Adams as president, and he made little progress with his ambitious legislative program. His years in the White House were perhaps the unhappiest period of Adams' life.
Adams was short and stout, and his shrill voice often broke when he became excited. Yet he spoke so well that he was nicknamed "Old Man Eloquent." Adams was affectionate with close friends, but more reserved toward others. He once referred to himself as "an unsocial savage."
During Adams' Administration, Noah Webster brought out his two-volume American Dictionary of the English Language, and James Fenimore Cooper published his famous novel The Last of the Mohicans. The American labor movement began in Philadelphia.

Like his father, he was elected U.S. President for one-term only. "I am a man of reserved, cold, austere, and forbidding manners," he revealed in his diary , calling himself "an unsocial savage." Proficient in Greek, Latin, French , Dutch, and German , young Adams was a brilliant statesman appointed as a minister to the Netherlands by George Washington . The highly-respected Adams was elected to the U.S. Senate then was appointed Secretary of State by President James Monroe in 1817. The clever Adams helped develop the Monroe Doctrine, which outlined the basic principles of American foreign policy. "May our country be always successful ," he wrote, "but whether successful or otherwise, always right." Elected to the Presidency in 1825, Adams liked to swim in the Potomac River and served in the House of Representatives after his
