Hijo de un abogado de Manchester que intentó que siguiera su profesión, Marchó a Londres en 1824, donde entró en contacto con el mundo editorial y literario. Su primer gran éxito fue la novela Rookwood (1834), que cautivó la imaginación de sus lectores con la historia del bandolero Dick Turpin . Today, Ainsworth, whose narrative style reminds one of Sir Walter Scott's, is chiefly remembered for popularizing the story of the highwayman Dick Turpin in Rookwood (1834) and the legend of Herne the Hunter in Windsor Castle During his early years of popularity in London Ainsworth played the gracious host at his home, Kendall Lodge, which lay just outside the metropolis, to such literary celebrities as John Forster Edward Bulwer-Lytton , and Charles Dickens While still at grammar school, Ainsworth began writing melodramatic, gothic plays, which he produced in a theatre he had set up in the basement of his family's home on King Street. All the paraphernalia of a professional theatre he manufactured: playbills, painted scenery, costumes, properties, and even stage machinery. He also contributed poems, plays, and short stories to a number of popular magazines: the Pocket Magazine , the Edinburgh Magazine , the New Monthly Magazine , the European Magazine , and the London Magazine . A solicitor's son, he entered the Manchester Free Grammar School at age twelve with a view to studying law. Began writing plays. First appearance in print The Rivals a Serio-Comic Tragedy , published under the pseudonym "T. Hall" in the Pocket Magazine Left the Grammar School. Began the study of law. Dedicated his first book, pseudonymously published, to Lamb: The Maid's Revenge; and A Summer's Evening Tale; with Other Poems "By Cheviot Ticheburn." After the death of his father, he left Manchester for London to study law. Admitted as a qualified solicitor. Publication of his first novel Sir John Chiverton (in collaboration with J. P. Aston). Site map William Harrison Ainsworth Profile Perhaps best remembered for his popularisation of the story of Dick Turpin in Rookwood (1834) and of Herne the Hunter in Windsor Castle (1843), and for his prodigious output of historical and romantic novels, Ainsworth combined his writing career with that of magazine owner and editor. Locations in the West Midlands feature largely in Boscobel , the story of Charles Stuart's escape after the battle of Worcester Born and educated in Manchester, Ainsworth spent his summer holidays at his great-uncle's home, Rostherne, in Cheshire. While still at school, he contributed poetry and short stories to a number of magazines, and also wrote gothic melodramas, which he produced in a theatre he had set up in the family home. He followed his father into the law, being admitted to the Court of King's Bench in London in 1826, at the same time continuing with his literary work. During this period he began a correspondence with Charles Lamb, collaborated with a fellow-clerk on a long romance, Sir John Chiverton , and married Fanny Ebers, the daughter of his publisher. From the outset the Annotations took a commanding place, especially among continental scholars, and he established for English nonconformity a tradition of culture and scholarship. There is no probability about the narrative given by Neal in his History of the Puritans (ii. 47) that he was poisoned by certain Jews. He died in 1622, or early in 1623, for in that year was published his Seasonable Discourse, or a Censure upon a Dialogue of the Anabaptists, in which the editor speaks of him as a departed worthy. A Virtual Encyclopaedia of Greater Manchester in the Third Millennium NAVIGATION Virtual Hosting by TheServerBank Manchester Celebrities William Harrison Ainsworth Samuel Bamford Born in 1788 in Middleton, the son of a muslin weaver, Bamford was educated at The Manchester Grammar School, and worked as a weaver in Middleton. Always interested in literature and poetry, he studied the classical works of Homer and Milton, before developing his own poetry and a strong socio-political awareness. Active in local politics with a strong social conscience, and a great influence on fellow workers. Spoke publicly at the Peterloo Massacre, an event which prompted his writing of "Passages in the Life of a Radical" (1840-44). He had earlier given up weaving to become a correspondent of London newspaper, where he wrote radical working-class material, and other volumes of poetry. He died in 1872. Benjamin Brierley He died in 1896.
