GHOULTIDE GREETINGS
Horror Stories for Christmas

Check out my Christmas collection at Double Dragon Publishing GHOULTIDE GREETINGS is a website dedicated to the Christmas ghost or horror story. In North America, we tend to identify horror with Halloween, but in Europe ghost stories (or winter's tales) were told at Christmas, when the supernatural seemed to be waiting just outside the door. On Christmas Eve, families would gather around the fire and tell stories to send a chill down the spine. Charles Dickens promoted this holiday fare in his magazines Household Words and All the Year Round, and by writing several classics which are still enjoyed today. For more on Dickens' contribution read: "Christmas Spirits: The Ghost Stories of Charles Dickens" by G. W. Thomas FREE Ebook! WINTER TALES in pdf

Mark Lemon and His Circle
Envelope signed in full by Charles Dickens Prepared by Dean Keller Revised by Athena Salaba, 21 February 1996 11th Floor, .33 cubic ft.
Scope and Content
This collection consists of autograph letters and envelopes. The majority are letters to Mark Lemon from writers such as William Makepeace Thackeray, Douglas Jerrold, Richard Doyle, John Forster, Shirley Brooks, and several others. A very valuable part of this collection are the six autograph and signed letters of Charles Dickens to his friend Mark Lemon, inviting him to dinner and discussing his writing. Also, this collection includes letters from and to a variety of correspondents, Mark Lemon's Circle, including John Forster, Alfred B. Garrod, Sir Stratford Canning, Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, Emma C. Roberts, and others; and autograph envelopes from W. Harrison Ainsworth and others. Finally, five original pencil drawings attributed to "Phiz" (Hablot K. Browne?) are present. The collection is arranged chronologically. This collection was purchased from book dealer David Holmes by Kent State University Libraries and the Department of English on December 1995.

Rookwood:
Dick Turpin's ride to York
(c. 1834, this ed.?)
by William Harrison Ainsworth
A RRIVED at the brow of the hill, whence such a beautiful view of the country surrounding the metropolis is obtained, Turpin turned for an instant to reconnoitre his pursuers. Coates and Titus he utterly disregarded; but Paterson was a more formidable foe, and he well knew that he had to deal with a man of experience and resolution. It was then, for the first time, that the thoughts of executing his extraordinary ride to York first flashed across him; his bosom throbbed high with rapture, and he involuntarily exclaimed aloud, as he raised himself in the saddle, "By God! I will do it!" * *Since the earlier editions of this Romance were published, we regret to state (for to us, at least, it is matter of regret, though probably not to the travellers along the Edgeware-road) that this gentle ascent has been cut through, and the fair prospect from its brow utterly destroyed.
Accordingly, as Turpin was by no means desirous of inconveniencing his mare in this early stage of the business, and as the ground was still upon an ascent, the parties preserved their relative distances.

Advertisement document.write(''); The Lady in the Loch melds fantasy and horror with the history of 18th-century Scotland. Midge Margret, a young woman who has escaped an abusive husband, is a member of itinerant gypsy-like folk called tinkers, who support themselves through metal-working and begging. She is befriended by the young Walter Scott (who would later write Ivanhoe and other great historical novels) when he, in his role as sheriff of Selkirk, investigates the death of a young woman. A hard winter brings the tinkers to camp in the outskirts of Edinborough. First one young tinker maiden, then another, is kidnapped and the bones of a recently-killed young woman are found in a drained loch. Midge Margret discovers items belonging to one disappeared maiden and eventually appeals to Scott, now sheriff of Edinborough, to locate the lost girls. Scott, along with his literary friend James Hogg, soon discover that there is more than an overzealous grave-robber at work. Midge Margret and Walter Scott, each in their own way, approach the secret behind the disappearances, and soon find themselves up against a demented necromancer.

reputation. William Harrison Ainsworth (18051882) English novelist (Rookwood,Jack Sheppard) and influence on young Dickens. Ainsworth
http://www.fidnet.com/~dap1955/dickens/family_friends.html
S cenes of family harmony and cozy firesides in many of Dickens' stories seem in stark contrast to his own family life. Growing up, the family situation was often precarious due to his father's trouble with debt, which landed him in debtors' prison in 1824 when Charles was 12.
L ater Dickens' own family was marked by strife as his relationship with his wife deteriorated and his sons seemed to have inherited their paternal grandfather's trouble handling finances. Dickens once lamented that he had "brought up the largest family with the smallest disposition for doing anything for themselves". Dickens' extended familie's constant drain on his finances, along with his built-in anxiety about money caused by his childhood, resulted in Dickens never feeling comfortable enough about his financial situation.
D ickens' circle of friends consisted of people prominent in the arts, journalism, publishing, politics and public life. A loyal friend who demanded loyalty in return, lines were drawn during Dickens' very public separation from Catherine. Those not sympathetic to Dickens' side soon felt his wrath, in some cases, forever.
John Dickens (1785-1851) - Dickens' father, was a clerk in the Navy Pay Office. In 1809 he married
