Dick Daunt first appeared in "In the Phantom City; or, the Adventures of Dick Daunt," which was written by "Allyn Draper" and which first appeared in Young Men of America from October 26 to December 7 1882. "Allyn Draper" was a Tousey house pseudonym; the true author of Dick Daunt's adventures is unknown. Dick Daunt and three other stalwart members of the Harvard Class of 1876 decide to spend a year wandering around Central America. (As far as I know this "Dick Daunt" is a separate character from the star of J.G. Bradley's Dick Daunt, the diver ee, John . This fictional version of John Dee was created by William Ainsworth and appeared in Guy Fawkes (1841). William Harrison Ainsworth (1805-1882) is best known as the writer of Gothics and historical novels, including the fabulously successful Rockwood (1834) and The Lancashire Witches (1849), the latter of which was the source for Terry Pratchett's witches. (Ainsworth also created Barbara Lovell ). Ainsworth has not aged particularly well, but his work still has its moments, and at his peak he was outselling Charles Dickens. And John Dee, of course, was the mystic, scientist, and astrologer to Queen Elizabeth I, as well as one of the founders of England's spy system. (If you want to learn more about him I'd advise going to the

For the most part I have not given them separate entries. I've lumped them together like this for a couple of reasons. For one, I haven't read some of the stories in question; as with many of the other entries here, the stories and books were written so long ago that only one or two libraries own them, and those libraries won't lend the books out (not that I can blame themthe books are in some cases 130 years old, or more). Another reason is that the lady detectives simply aren't that distinctive. Each entry on this this list has an intrinsic worth, I think; at least, I read them and am interested in them. But as with many of the male detective characters (see their entry above) many of the lady detectives are just not that interesting: Miss Amelia Butterworth was the creation of Anna Katharine Green (1846-1935). Green was neither the first female author of a mystery nor the first to produce a series character, but she was the author of the first American "best-seller" and deservedly holds the title of "Mother of Detective Fiction." Her first series starred a Ebenezer Gryce, a New York City policeman; the first of twelve books in the series, and the only one reprinted, is The Leavenworth Case . Green's second series starred Miss Amelia Butterworth, and she appeared in six of Green's novels, acting as a foil to Gryce; she appeared in

    Poe's Literary Criticism
Since most of the literary criticism of Poe's era is unsigned, attribution is a complex and divisive issue. All items included here have been attributed to Poe at one time or another, but are subject to further analysis as our project proceeds. In general, uncertain attributions are noted by the presence of a question mark ("?"), with more question marks ("?") being used to denote less certain items. A few doubtful items are included merely because they have not been disproven. Again, these marks are not definitive at this stage. At the end of each selection, beyond the "End of Text" tag, is a code, such as "[S:1]". This code is intended as an internal marker for keeping track of verification of the text. In general, a value of "[S:0]" or the total absence of the code notes that the text has been entered, but not yet verified. Anyone who has ever tried to proofread a large volume of text will appreciate the inherent difficulties.

    The Collections and Books:
During his lifetime, Poe planned, but never published a collection of his literary notices. A posthumous collection, edited by Rufus Wilmot Griswold, incorporates a few of his reviews, taken from the material Poe had accumulated for "Literary America." These collections are listed chronologically.

5.3 Official Regulation of Corporal Punishment
There have been two methods other than moral persuasion and professional good practice wherein the use of corporal punishment by teachers has been restricted. The first is the law, whereby a teacher may be found criminally liable for assault, and secondly, governmental or local regulation, whereby a teacher may be dismissed or lose his licence to teach. In some countries, of course, as we have already seen in France and Holland, it was prohibited by law by the end of the 19th century, so that in the following discussion we are speaking of English-speaking countries.
As far back as 1765 Blackstone summarised the law of England on this matter.
[The parent] may lawfully correct the child, being under age, in a reasonable manner; for this is for the benefit of his education.... He may also delegate part of his parental authority, during his life, to the tutor or school master of the child; who is then in loco parentis , and has such a portion of the power of the parent committed to his charge, viz. That of restraint and correction, as may be necessary to answer the purposes for which he is employed. (in Bargen, 1961, 126)
