Shinchosha, Tokyo 1994, pp. 65-135.

HAIKU for PEOPLE!
since 1995.
What is Haiku?
Haiku is one of the most important form of traditional japanese poetry. Haiku is, today, a 17-syllable verse form consisting of three metrical units of 5, 7, and 5 syllables. Since early days, there has been confusion between the three related terms Haiku, Hokku and Haikai. The term hokku literally means "starting verse", and was the first starting link of a much longer chain of verses known as haika. Because the hokku set the tone for the rest of the poetic chain, it enjoyed a privileged position in haikai poetry, and it was not uncommon for a poet to compose a hokku by itself without following up with the rest of the chain. Largely through the efforts of Masaoka Shiki, this independence was formally established in the 1890s through the creation of the term haiku. This new form of poetry was to be written, read and understood as an independent poem, complete in itself, rather than part of a longer chain.

His father gave him the name Ryonosuke, "Dragon Helper," becaue he was born at the hour of the dragon, on a dragon day, in the dragon month, of a dragon year. He early in life developed a love for fantasy the macabre. A typical tale from this collection is "Tobacco the Devil" in which Faust's devil journeys to Japan in company with Francis Xavier. Rashomon Other Stories (Liveright, 1952) by Ryunosuke Akutagawa (1892-1927) is a collection of morbid weird shorts inspired somewhat by Poe Kafka. At times a medievalist like William Morris, Ryunosuke's graduation paper was a study of Morris. Two of the tales from this collection were adapted as Kurosawa's classic film Rashomon. NEW NATIONAL THEATRE
RASHOMON

"The pictures are haunting and mesmerizing in their simplicity (...) there are no tricks in Watanabe's production, just techniques of the artist painting a picture in sound and shape (...) There is nothing to distract (...) We see the emotions laid bare in a magnificent, compelling rendering of the well-known story." Japan Times

Ancient Literature ( - 1868) When Japan opened to the rest of the world in the Meiji period (1868-1912), the influence of western literary concepts and techniques was felt strongly. Novelists experimented with 'new' ideas such as liberalism, idealism, and romanticism and were variously influenced by French, British or German literature. One writer who came to Japan and became the first foreigner to truly capture the essence of the country in his work was Lafcadio Hearn , better known in Japan by his adopted name Koizumi Yakumo Kwaidan , a collection of ghost stories, is perhaps best known by Japanese people. The period between the turn of the century and the domination of militarism in the 1930's produced three great writers: Mori Ogai Natsume Soseki and his protoge Akutagawa Ryunosuke Ogai (1862-1922) gave up an early literary career to concentrate on his work as a doctor with the Japanese army, returning to writing only after his retirement. He was inspired mainly by German literature and played a leading role in the Japanese romantic literary movement. He wrote poetry, drama and historical biography, but his best work of fiction is considered to be his novel
