The following biographical sketch is adapted with deletions and additionsfrom Sachiko S. Schierbeck, Japanese Women Novelists in the 20th Century: 104 biographies, 1900-1993 . Copenhagen: Museum Tusalanum Press, 1994, pp. 112-118.
ENCHI FUMIKO (1905-1986) was born in Tokyo on October 2, 1905 and died of heart failure on November 14,1986. Her father was Ueda Kazutoshi (1867-1937), a distinguished Japanese linguist. Her grandmother (of male-lineage) was an avid partisan of Kabuki and a good story-teller. Enchi attended the girls' middle school of Japan Women's University from 1918-1922; she received private tuition in English, French. and Kambun (Chinese literature) until her marriage. She also attended the lectures of Osanai Kaoru. the founder of modern Japanese drama. In 1930, she married Enchi Yoshimatsu. a journalist with whom she had a daughter. She had two major operations, a mastectomy in 1938 and a hysterectomy in 1946.
As a young child Enchi was taken to the Kabuki theatre and listened to the gesaku novels of the late Edo era. A precocious girl, she read everything from the Genji monogatari to Edo gesaku and modern novels in adult magazines. At 13 her reading list included the works of Oscar Wilde, Edgar A1lan Poe, Hoffman. and the writings of lzumi Kyoka (1873-1939), Nagai Kafu (1879-1959). Akutagawa Ryunosuke (1892-1927), and Tanizaki Jun'ichiro (1868-1965), whose sado-masochistic aestheticism particularly fascinated her. Her interest in the theatre was encouraged also by her father. In 1926 her one-act play. "Furusato" (A Birthplace), was published in the journal

Upstarts debunk myth of illiterate youth
By SHIN OSANAI, The Asahi Shimbun `You have to write a great deal,'' says Rio Shimamoto, ``before you can call yourself a full-fledged writer.'' The advice is ordinary enough. What's not is that Shimamoto, a full-fledged writer herself with an Akutagawa Award for Fiction nomination to her credit, is all of 19. Young writers are getting younger and younger. Shimamoto is not the only teenager winning serious literary recognition. Risa Wataya, also 19, saw her debut novel become a bestseller. Are young people really, as some of their frowning elders fear, rejecting literature in favor of earthier, preliterate pastimes? A new crop of very young writers suggests that literature might have a future after all. Shimamoto started writing novels in elementary school. In January her first published work, ``Ritoru Bai Ritoru'' (Little by little), brought out by Kodansha, was a candidate for the prestigious Akutagawa Award.

Anthology IN A GROVE Akutagawa Ryunosuke (1892-1927) Translated by Takasiti Kojima
The Testimony of a Woodcutter Questioned by a High Police Commissioner
Yes, sir. Certainly, it was I who found the body. This morning, as usual, I went to cut my daily quota of cedars, when I found the body in a grove in a hollow in the mountains. The exact location? About 150 meters off the Yamashina stage road. It's an out-of-the-way grove of bamboo and cedars. The body was lying flat on its back dressed in a bluish silk kimono and a wrinkled head-dress of the Kyoto style. A single sword-stroke had pierced the breast. The fallen bamboo-blades around it were stained with bloody blossoms. No, the blood was no longer running. The wound had dried up, I believe. And also, a gad-fly was stuck fast there, hardly noticing my footsteps. You ask me if I saw a sword or any such thing? No, nothing, sir. I found only a rope at the root of a cedar near by. And . . . well, in addition to a rope, I found a comb. That was all. Apparently he must have made a battle of it before he was murdered, because the grass and fallen bamboo-blades had been trampled down all around. 'A horse was near by?'

I will be updating this list of links over the rest of the semester. My aim is to be selective and choose the most useful sites for context and research. This list represents only the tip of the iceberg; to get a sense of the range of pages out there on the various authors and topics related to this course, I highly recommend that you search on your own by going to any web search engine (I think teoma and google are the best for looking up specific things; yahoo!, excite, infoseek, lycos, and profusion.com are good if you want a somewhat organized overview of what's out there). Please email me with suggestions for additions to this list at simon@fredonia.edu

Session 55: Authorizing Madness: Insanity and the Creation of Meaning in Modern Japan and China
Organizer: Pamela Abee-Taulli , Independent Scholar Chair: Mary Jacob , Princeton University Discussant: Philip F. C. Williams , Arizona State University insanity, and, on the other, meanings assigned by insanity. It addresses what is called the "modern" construction of madness in post-Restoration Japan; and it explores the authority of the mad voice in twentieth-century writing in Japan and China. Susan Burns’ paper introduces the historical context of so-called "modern" notions of insanity through her examination of transformation and continuity in the debate over proper treatment of the phenomenon known as monotsuki , or animal or spirit possession, in early-modern Japan. Mary Jacob examines the work of four contemporary Chinese writers in which the present is given meaning through a fictional portrayal of madness which serves to reintegrate the past into collective consciousness.
Caught Between Inspiration and the Institution: The Madness of Akutagawa Ryunosuke
Pamela Abee-Taulli , Independent Scholar In both pre-modern and modern Japan, mental infirmity was constructed as a sort of genius, a super-sensibility that reaches beyond ordinary perception. In the former there was a conception of madness as divine inspiration; while the latter period saw the appropriation of the nineteenth-century western idea of mental and physical instability as a key to the realm of the unconscious.
