ALCOTT, Louisa May
, author, born in Germantown, now a part of Philadelphia, 29 November, 1832. She is a daughter of Amos Bronson Alcott. When she was about two years of age her parents removed to Boston, and in her eighth year to Concord, Massachusetts At the age of eleven she was brought under the influence of the community that endearored to establish itself near Harvard, in Worcester County. Thoreau was for a time her teacher; but she was instructed mainly by her father. She began to write for publication at the age of sixteen, but with no marked success for fifteen years. During that time she devoted ten years to teaching. In 1862 she went to Washington as a volunteer nurse, and for many months labored in the military hospitals. At this time she wrote to her mother and sisters letters containing sketches of hospital life and experience, which on her return were revised and published in book form (Boston, 1863), and attracted much attention. In 1866 she went to Europe to recuperate her health, which had been seriously impaired by her hospital work, and on her return in 1867 she wrote "Little Women," which was published the following year, and made her famous. LOUISA MAY ALCOTT (1832-1888)
Little Women or Meg, Jo, Beth and Amy . Boston: Roberts Brothers, 1868. This barely disguised account of Alcott family life marks the advent of the modern juvenile novel, along with Mary M. Dodge's Hans Brinker (1866) and Thomas B. Aldrich's The Story of a Bad Boy (1870). In this tale of coming of age in nineteenth-century New England, Alcott portrayed childhood and adolescence with realism, naturalism and sincerity, even to the point of capturing the speech patterns and behavior of teenagers. This was quite unconventional for the fiction of her time. When Little Women was published in the fall of 1868, only a small number was printed, and these did not sell well. As a consequence, when the second part was issued the following year, it too was printed in a small edition, but became extremely popular, awakening the public to the first part, both of which were soon sold out. Thus the first issues of Little Women and Little Women, Part Second

Louisa May Alcott was for years best known for her much-read children's literature, Little Women, Little Men, Jo's Boys . Today the lurid (for the 19th century) tales she penned to help support her family can be found among best-selling paperbacks and on library shelves. R enowned for her classic novels LITTLE WOMEN and LITTLE MEN, Louisa May Alcott's passion for literature and the intellectual life were shaped in the bosom of her family. One of four daughters of the prominent Transcendentalist and pioneering educational innovator, Bronson Alcott, and his wife, Abigail May, who distinguished herself in the Abolitionist, Suffrage, and other reform causes of the period, Louisa May was born in Pennsylvania, but grew up in Boston and later in Concord , where she associated directly with her parents' circle which included the Emersons Thoreaus , Hawthornes, and Ripleys. Accustomed to the straightened circumstances to which her father's idealism perpetually condemned the family, Louisa began to write stories at an early age to supplement the family income. Said Emerson of her genteel novels, "She is a natural source of stories... She is and is to be, the poet of children. She knows their angels." But as recent scholarship has demonstrated, the mature Louisa May also knew about the demons which people the human soul. Her tales of Gothic fiction, written behind the mask of pseudonyms, reveal a psychological depth that compares favorably with the best writers of the genre such as Poe and Hawthorne.

Louisa May Alcott 18321888. Louisa May Alcott was born in Germantown, PA, onNov. 29, 1832, the second daughter of Abigail May and Amos Bronson Alcott.
    http://daphne.palomar.edu/scrout/literary.htm
Louisa May Alcott 1832-1888 Flower Fables, but the tragic death of her sister from complications of scarlet fever brought Louisa back home to support her family emotionally and financially. In 1862, Louisa May Alcott felt compelled to serve as a Civil War nurse in Washington D.C. However, she contracted typhoid fever and was treated with calomel, which contains mercury. The treatment cured her of typhoid, but the mercury would eventually kill her with heavy metal poisoning. After the Civil War Louisa May's writing career took off, especially with the publication of Little Women in 1868. From then on she was finally able to support her family and she became one of the most prolific American writers of the nineteenth century. By 1884, the effects of the heavy metal poisoning began to take effect. Louisa published Jo's Boy's in 1886. She died two days after her father on Mar.6,1888. Louisa May Alcott produced in about thirty- five years more than three hundred works in a variety of literary genres . A great deal of her work was published in serial form as was common in that day. Serial publications were like television sitcoms, dramas and mini series for the nineteenth century. Little Women Little Men and Jo's Boys were meant for juvenile audiences. Actually, Alcott began writing at a very early age, since part of her father's radical education was to encourage each pupil to keep a diary /journal. Louisa wrote numerous poems, plays and short stories as a teenager and wanted to become an actress. She placed a high value on service to her family and those in need. Although based on her experiences, Alcott held a deeper conviction to devotion and altruism. The Alcott family explored communal living and open classroom techniques, including nature walks with of Henry David Thoreau. Although poor themselves the Alcotts would take in those in need and used their Concord house as a haven for travelers including fugitive slaves.
