A.L. Burt Gilbert K. Westgard II MERSHON COMPANY ... MACLELLAN NY COMPANY Horatio Alger, Jr. was an American author (1832-1899). Alger produced the one of the first boys' adventure series. Alger published over 118 novels in book form. Another 280 novels were produced in magazines along with more than five hundred short stories. From the many books Horatio Alger wrote, which included Silas Snobdens Office Boy , his young heroes succeed through a mixture of pluck and luck. They are lucky, in part, because they deserve to be lucky. A given hero may appear in several books, e.g., "Ragged Dick," and Silas Snobdens Office Boy , but the books do not have a common set of characters. Regardless of their names, the heroes are remarkably similar. Horatio Alger, Jr. was the oldest of five children of a debt-ridden New England, Unitarian minister. He was very frail. He was under weight and undersized, suffered from bronchial asthma, and near sightedness. Because of his poor health, the family deferred his introduction to the alphabet and reading until he was six years old. He started formal school at age 10 and achieved Phi Beta Kappa at Harvard. He was ranked eighth in a class of 89. He volunteered for the union army three times and was rejected three times because of his asthma and small size (just over five feet and about 120 pounds).

Horatio Alger, Jr.
On January 13, 1832, Horatio Alger, Jr. was born in Chelsea (now Revere), Massachusetts. His father, Reverend Horatio Alger, was a Unitarian minister at the First Congregational Church and Society at Chelsea. Alger's mother, Olive (Fenno) Alger, was the daughter of a wealthy merchant and landowner. Surprisingly, given his future career as writer, Alger did not learn the alphabet until the age of six and did not begin his formal education until, by his account, the age of ten. His early education was conducted at home, under the irregular direction of his father, and consisted of algebra and Latin, this despite his obvious deficiency in English. Because Alger did not attend school and his father was preoccupied with church business, Alger had a great deal of free-time. This time was filled with reading "whatever came in my way," and included both educational and entertaining works. Early in 1867, Alger supplied a story to Student and Schoolmate entitled Ragged Dick; or, Street Life in New York. The tale centers around the life of a young bootblack, culled from Alger's interest in the lives of the "street Arabs," or boys who lived on the streets of New York. Alger had plenty of experience from which to draw: Since his arrival in New York, Alger visited places frequented by street boys, including the Newsboys' Lodging House operated by the Children's Aid Society. The Newsboys' Lodging House operated from a loft above the

It is a satisfaction that ... they are without exception, so far as we can judge, unobjectionable morally, whatever fault be found with their literary style and composition. They do not even obscurely pander to vice, or excite the passions. North American Review, 1864 I was wandering around a flea market last summer when I saw a stack of books displayed beneath a sign that said "DIME NOVELS." Naturally, the first thought that popped into my head was "Hooray! Bargain books!" Imagine my surprise when I noticed that the books in question were priced between US$10 and $40 each. At this point, the bookseller wandered over and, sensing both my ignorance and my interest, explained that dime novels are cheaply made paperbacks from the 1800s that were originally sold as part of a series for 10 cents per book (hence, the name).

Links to Alger Sites Major Works Biography Alger, Horatio (1832-1899), American writer, born in Revere, Massachusetts, and educated at Harvard College and Harvard Divinity School. Ordained a Unitarian minister in 1864, Alger became chaplain of a lodging house for newsboys in New York City in 1866.
In Alger's first volume of fiction, Ragged Dick (1867), and in similar works, such as Luck and Pluck (1869) and Tattered Tom (1871), he portrayed underprivileged youths who win fame and wealth by practicing the virtues of honesty, diligence, and perseverance. Alger wrote more than 100 such works. Although they have little literary significance, his novels influenced American youth by emphasizing merit, rather than mere social status, as the chief determinant of success. His works became so closely identified with this theme that the stories of people who succeeded through the strength of their own efforts became known as "Horatio Alger tales." Horatio Alger by Carrie Conger Links to Online Resources Books and Articles Horatio Alger was born January thirteenth to the daughter to a wealthy landowner and a Unitarian minister. His education did not begin until he was six years of age, taught by his father. At the age of sixteen, Alger entered Harvard, earning his tuition by running errands for the president. While at Harvard, he excelled at academics, graduating Phi Beta Kappa, and was a member of the Psi Upsilon fraternity.
    Horatio Alger , 1832-1899
His series was popular until the publishers stopped issuing them, which was in the 1920's. Some reasons for this may be that his stories, "…even though their plots, characterizations, and dialogue were consistently, even outrageously bad," (Britannica, par. 3), Brought hope to the working man, because the cheerful, diligent, virtuous character in is book always got the wonderful reward he deserved. The Horatio Alger Society now gives a Horatio Alger Award to individuals that achieve success trough self-reliance, decency, honesty, and self-discipline, who are, in short, characters from a Horatio Alger novel, pulling themselves up by the bootstraps and claiming their American Dream.
