61. Horatio Alger Jr
Horatio Alger Jr Alger, Horatio (18321899), American writer, born in Revere,Massachusetts, and educated at Harvard College and Harvard Divinity School.
http://www.internet-users.org/jacksbooks/alger.html
The Giant Library for Boys and Girls Horatio Alger Jr Alger, Horatio (1832-1899), American writer, born in Revere, Massachusetts, and educated at Harvard College and Harvard Divinity School. Ordained a Unitarian minister in 1864, Alger became chaplain of a lodging house for newsboys in New York City in 1866. In Alger's first volume of fiction, Ragged Dick (1867), and in similar works, such as Luck and Pluck (1869) and Tattered Tom (1871), he portrayed underprivileged youths who win fame and wealth by practicing the virtues of honesty, diligence, and perseverance. Alger wrote more than 100 such works. Although they have little literary significance, his novels influenced American youth by emphasizing merit, rather than mere social status, as the chief determinant of success. His works became so closely identified with this theme that the stories of people who succeeded through the strength of their own efforts became known as “Horatio Alger tales.” authors Home

65. INDUSTRY
Alger, Horatio (18321899).
http://people.history.ohio-state.edu/mcdaniel130/industry.htm
BACK TO MAIN PAGE BACK TO CHAPTER THEMES INDUSTRY, IMMIGRANTS, AND CITIES, 1870-1900 Chapter Themes:
  • Between the end of Reconstruction and the beginning of the twentieth century the United States became the world’s leading industrial power. Great new industries—most notably steel—arose, drawing on readily available natural resources, a growing pool of immigrant labor, and an efficient and inexpensive railway system. Labor was of the utmost importance to the dynamic American industrial economy. Even a rapidly expanding population could not provide the workers needed in mines and mills. Immigration and a growing female presence in non-farm labor met that demand: 25 million Europeans reached American shores between 1870 and 1914, and women constituted a quarter of the nonagricultural work force in 1900. The massive sized of manufacturing operations radically altered the American workplace. Owing to a managerial revolution, management had little contact with the thousands of employees who staffed those enterprises. Workers increasingly performed more specialized functions or tended machines that did. This change in labor tasks caused workers to lose the sense of materiy and knowledge they had once enjoyed. Attempts to organize labor produced mixed results. Efforts to unionize workers in major industries were stymied by the continuing influx of immigrants and because unskilled workers were easy to replace. The violence and demonstrations associated with strikes antagonized the public and led to government support for management. The American Federation of Labor was modestly successful in recruiting skilled employees. Some of the unskilled turned to socialism as a cure for labor’s ailments, and more militant laborers formed the Industrial Workers of the World.

Postage stamps, very small in comparison to the large newspapers which flourished in the United States, graphically display in their limited format newspaper history. Stephen Dayr Press The first printing press in the English colonies of America was set up at Harvard College in 1638. This press became known as the Stephen Daye or Daye Press, so named after its earliest operator. Most of the works printed from this press were religious in nature and under the strict control of the colonial government. In 1639, Daye printed the Freeman's Oath and in 1640 the Bay Psalm Book. Nearly a century and a half later the first Vermont newspaper was printed on the Daye Press. On February 12, 1781, Volume 1, Number 1 of the Vermont Gazette or Green Mountain Post-Boy was pulled from the press bed.
