38. Owsley House
2 Or so the Kentuckyborn novelist James Lane Allen (1849-1925) describedthe plight of the wilderness scholar in The Choir Invisible (1897).
http://owsleyhouse.8m.com/wil.htm
William Owsley, son of William and Catherine (Bolin) Owsley, was born in Virginia in 1782. The following year his family settled on Drake’s Creek, near the present site of Crab Orchard in Lincoln County, Kentucky. The Owsleys thrived in this wilderness "where the tomahawk and scalping knife . . . still frequently gleamed," and, in due course, young William had ten or eleven siblings. Attending the common schools as one of those " . . . poor little backwoods academicians, driven in about sunrise, driven out toward dusk . . . ," Owsley graduated to surveying, teaching and, by 1801, service as a deputy sheriff in Garrard County. It was during this period that he became acquainted with John Boyle, a prominent attorney, future Chief Justice of the Kentucky Court of Appeals, and the man under whom Owsley read law. In 1803, Boyle’s protégé began practicing law in Garrard County. Owsley, however, had not yet abandoned teaching. In 1804, he married one of his pupils, Elizabeth Gill. They would have five children: Amanda, Almira, Amelia, Erasmus Boyle and Mariah. Politics were then, as now, a second vocation and favorite diversion of many Kentucky attorneys, and Owsley proved no exception. He was elected to the Kentucky House in 1809. After a brief appointment to the state Court of Appeals (he was deprived of his seat when the court’s membership was reduced), Owsley returned to the House in 1811. He returned to the Court of Appeals in 1813 and remained there until 1828.
