The late 19th century saw the coming of age of skyscraper design from the early cast-iron structures to the steel-framed buildings, rising in great numbers all over the city. The visual form of these late-19th and early 20th century buildings was still rather much tied to the revivalist forms of the bygone century, neo-Gothic, neo-Renaissance and neo-Classicism. Bradford Lee Gilbert
was built in 1888 as the first all-metal-framed building in New York City. It was built on a plot only six meters wide, which ruled out the use of massive masonry walls. The 11-storey, 48-meter building had an internal steel frame as the load-bearing structure, and the architect reserved the two top floors for his own use to take away any suspicions that the new owner might have about the strength of the building. The building has been since demolished.

(Mss. 4634) Inventory Biographical/Historical Note Isaac Thomas (1774-1859) was active as a politician, lawyer and planter. He moved from Tennessee to Alexandria, Louisiana in 1819 where he operated a steam boat, a sawmill and ran a plantation. He was a large land_ and slaveowner, and was reputedly the first planter to introduce sugar cultivation to central Louisiana. He was a Democratic member of the Louisiana State Senate (1823-27). His first wife was Jane Bullard (d. ca. 1833); he then married Emmeline Flint, with whose family he was in business. Scope and Content Note The papers relate to the business and legal career of Isaac Thomas. Several papers document the history of land ownership in Rapides and Catahoula Parishes, La. Letters and legal papers document the practice of law in Louisiana. Series Descriptions/ Container List
  • Financial Papers, 1818_38 (2 folders).
    Correspondence, 1828-51 (5 folders).

  • Correspondence is in English and French and largely concerns legal and financial business. It includes several letters from Susan F. Dunlap of Vicksburg, executrix of the estate of H.W. Dunlap, relating to the settlement of her husband's estate, the sale of a slave and the transplanting of roses sent to Thomas's wife (1849_50, n.d.), and a letter concerning a judgement on the administration of the estate of Levi Martin (see below, Legal Papers). Family correspondence consists of a letter from Andrew J. Isacks, Thomas's nephew, whom he was financing through college at Canonsburg, Pennsylvania (August, 1841), a letter from Thomas's brother-in-law, Micah P. Flint, concerning land bought in Monroe, La. (April 6, 1936) and a letter from Thomas's daughter, Jane Bullard Thomas, asking permission to spend a year in the North to continue her education (n.d.). A letter from A. Binge details the cuttings of seventeen varieties of grape shipped to Thomas (March 8, 1843).

Children's Literature
Island 1: Instruction, Religion, and Early Didactic Writers A horn-book For centuries, children began learning to read with the alphabet and the Lord's Prayer. Shown here is a facsimile of a small hand-held horn-book, named for the thin sheet of horn that protected the printed alphabet from which the child would learn to spell out letters and words. Alphabet books With the horn-book are displayed three early nineteenth-century American alphabet books, showing the interrelation of reading and religious instruction, both in the home and in the Sunday School movement. Displayed: Peter Piper , Philadelphia: Johnson, 1836; The Picture Alphabet in Prose and Verse , New York: the American Tract Society, ?1840; and Marmaduke Multiply
New York and Boston: C.S.Francis, [?1850]. Following the model of alphabet rhymes, this collection of mnemonic rhymes was designed to teach the multiplication tables. It was originally issued by John Harris in four parts in 1816-1817, with the subtitle A Merry Method of Making Minor Mathematicians
Volume 2, Boston, 1834.

Angelica Singleton Van Buren
Island 5 Books belonging to Mary Carter Singleton (1837-1863) and other family members Literary taste in the generation after Angelica is represented by her niece, Mary Carter Singleton. Twenty years on, the upbringing of a young lady in South Carolina remained remarkably similar to Angelica's own, including attending a finishing school, yet Mary Singleton's books show also a significant new interest in works by women authors and about women's issues. In 1858, Mary married Rev. Robert Barnwell, thereby providing the link between the Singletons and the Barnwell family, through whom this collection descended. Also displayed in this case are books from the Phillips' gift from other members of the family, including her two sons, along with some unsigned items from the collection that round out the picture it gives of women's reading in the mid-nineteenth century. Caroline Gilman, 1794-1888

Native language materials include many religious books in part because it was in the cause of religion that the language was transcribed into the English alphabet. Before this transcription the language was oral, but communication across time and space was possible through the use of symbols.
