Roald Amundsen
Roald Amundsen, born in 1872 near Oslo, Norway, left his mark on the Heroic Era as one of the most successful polar explorers ever born. His career of adventure began at the age of 15, originally studying medicine, but dropping out to go to sea where he soon moved his way up to the rank of mate. His first experience in the Antarctic was with Adrien de Gerlache 's 1899 BELGICA EXPEDITION . He became the first to travel the Northwest Passage, in his ship Gjoa in 1903-06. After this expedition, plans were assembled to drift across the North Pole in Nansen's famous FRAM , but news arrived of Peary's successful attainment of the pole which caused Amundsen to make new plans covert plansfor an expedition to the Antarctic and the subsequent capture of the South Pole. On December 14, 1911, Amundsen and four others stood at the South Pole, a month before Robert Scott . This expedition was an incredible masterpiece of organization. Here is the story... "The North Pole is reached!" was the news that flashed all over the world...it was September 1909 when the news reached Amundsen. The original plan of the

Roald Amundsen

ROALD AMUNDSEN When Roald Amundsen, on December 14th 1911, stood victorious at the South Pole. He had reached a goal that was the dream of many men. For the first time, human voices broke the awesome silence of the world´s southernmost point. The achievement was to bring fame to Amundsen and his men. But in a letter, describing his reactions at that time, Amundsen openly confessed that "no man has ever stood at the spot so diametrically opposed to the object of his real desires", which for the ambitious Norwegian was the North Pole. For Amundsen a new goal always beckoned. He himself described his life as a "constant journey towards the final destination"... Roald Amundsen (1872-1928?)

Headline News Weather Wildlife/Penguins Science History Shackleton Stations Treaty Expeditions Roald Amundsen History Main Timeline 'Race to the Pole Norwegian polar explorer, born in Borge, and educated at the University of Christiania (now the University of Oslo). He entered the Norwegian navy in 1894 and spent the following nine years studying science. From 1903 to 1906 he led his first important expedition in the small sloop Gjöa. During this voyage he sailed successfully through the Northwest Passage from the Atlantic to the Pacific Ocean and determined the position of the north magnetic pole. His next expedition (1910-1912) sailed in a larger ship, the Fram, and gained fame as one of the most successful undertakings in the history of Antarctic exploration. With his companions, he lived in Antarctica for more than a year, conducting explorations and scientific investigations. On December 14, 1911, he reached the South Pole, becoming the first person known to have accomplished this feat. He had favorable weather conditions during the voyages, but his success was due primarily to his knowledge of polar conditions, his attention to minute details, and his ability to endure great physical stress.

Roald Amundsen (1872-1928)
Roald Engebreth Gravning Amundsen enjoyed being referred to as the last of the Vikings . He is now considered by some as the greatest polar explorer of all times, having bridged the gap between the eras of traditional and machine based polar exploration by mastering a combination of the best of the so called "primitive" techniques of the Eskimo with a dash of modern technology. He was well aware that when it came to surviving in the polar regions, a few hundred years of European technology could not out-do the Eskimo's ten thousand years of experience. His unique mixture of technical skills, thorough planning and leadership skills are unequaled in exploration history. Amundsen was, however, plagued by an almost complete disregard for monetary issues. He was in heavy personal debt at the eve of departure for almost all of his expeditions, and was constantly mortgaging his house or borrowing money from family and friends. Upon returning from the unkown his writings and lectures always made the deed sound too easy. He expected his achievments to speak for themselves, and so supressed the difficulties he encountered, and his thorough planning and leadership resulted in an all-around lack of suffering that the press and public did not appreciate. They crave drama, desparation and screw ups. Amundsen's screw ups usually resulted in loss of income, rather than some sort of fight for survival. Amundsen was almost too good at what he did!
