    Administrative/Biographical History
Roald Engelbregt Gravning Amundsen was born on 16 July 1872 near Oslo in Norway into a prosperous ship-building family. In his early years, he was inspired to become a polar explorer by travel books on the Arctic and by the exploits of his countryman Fridtjof Nansen. After two years as a medical student at Oslo University, he went to sea in a sealer to East Greenland, obtaining his mate's certificate in 1895. He joined the Belgian Antarctic Expedition, 1897-1899 (leader Adrien Victor Joseph de Gerlache de Gomery) as first mate of Belgica On his return he obtained his master's certificate in 1900 and also trained in geomagnetism under the German physicist Georg von Neumayer. In 1903, despite inadequate financial support, he sailed the small fishing boat with six companions from Baffin Bay westward through the Arctic archipelago of northern Canada, living in close contact with local Inuit. During the first winter, he sledged with dog teams to the North Magnetic Pole. In the second summer

He began an education in medicine, but left to go to sea. Amundsen became identified with Polar explorations. In 1897, he served on the Belgica on the Belgian Antarctic Expedition. Between 1903 and 1906 he traversed the Northwest Passage on the Gjoa . In December, 1911, he reached the South Pole a month before R. F. Scott. He traversed the Northeast Passage in the Maud between 1918 and 1920. Later he flew from Spitzbergen with L. Ellsworth in an attempt to reach the North Pole. The effort failed when they were forced to land on pack ice. He flew over the North Pole in the air ship Norge with Umberto Nobile in 1926. Two years later he died while participating in a search for Nobile after the wreck of the airship Italia This collection consists of a reel of microfilm containing copies of documents, correspondence, articles and photographs from Alaskan and other libraries concerning Amundsen's activities in Alaska. The papers primarily concern the period between 1903 and 1906, and the period from 1918 to 1928. Most of the correspondence is between Amundsen and Carl Loman, a resident of Nome. There are several of Carl Loman's diaries, as well as photographs of Amundsen, Loman and his family, Nobile, and of various vessels and airships. Approximately half the collection is composed of printed materials such as newspaper clippings and articles. These materials were compiled by the Alaska Historical Library, Juneau, Alaska. A finding aid was compiled by Stephen Jackson.

Amundsen, Roald Englebert Gravning (1872-1928). . London: Archibald Constable, 1908. Roald Amundsen was born in 1872, the son of a Norwegian shipowner. As an adolescent he read John Franklin 's works with passionate interest and resolved to go in search of the famous Northwest Passage for which so many explorers had perished. Amundsen learned the sailor's trade on whaling ships. In 1897 he accompanied Belgian navigator Adrien de Gerlache as second in command on an expedition to the Antarctic, thus taking part in the first wintering in those regions. In 1902 Amundsen bought a 47-ton cutter, the . In June of the following year he went to sea with six companions, reached the west coast of Greenland, crossed Baffin Sea and entered Lancaster Strait. He spent the following two winters on King William Island doing scientific research which enabled him, among other things, to reposition the magnetic pole at more than 50 kilometers northwest of the position determined by John Ross in 1830. On August 13, 1905, the

Amundsen, Roald 1872-1928, Norwegian polar explorer; the first man to reach the South Pole. He served (1897-99) as first mate on the Belgica (under the Belgian Adrien de Gerlache) in an expedition to the Antarctic, and he commanded the in the arctic regions in the first negotiation of the Northwest Passage (1903-6); the was the first single ship to complete the route through the Northwest Passage. His account appeared in English as Amundsen's North West Passage (1908). He then purchased Fridtjof Nansen's Fram and prepared to drift toward the North Pole and then finish the journey by sledge. The news that Robert E. Peary had anticipated him in reaching the North Pole caused Amundsen to consider going south. He was successful in reaching the South Pole on Dec. 14, 1911, after a dash by dog team and skis from the Bay of Whales (an inlet of Ross Sea). He arrived there just 35 days before Robert F. Scott . This story he told in The South Pole (tr. 1913). He had added much valuable scientific and geological information to the knowledge of Antarctica. In 1918, back in the arctic regions, he set out to negotiate the Northeast Passage in the

Roald Amundsen aboard the Fram after his return from the South Pole Roald Amundsen originally began a career studying medicine at the University of Christiana (now the University of Oslo), but dropped out in order to go to sea. His first Antarctic trip was in 1899 on the Belgica expedition when he was one of the first party ever to over winter in Antarctica as the ship became trapped in the pack ice and drifted until it broke out in the following spring. He established his credentials on this trip as a leader, ice master and as a resourceful expeditioner.

    Biography
Amundsen Roald (1872 - 1928) Norwegian explorer, was born in Borge, Norway. In June 1903, he sailed in the Gjoa and, after two years of exploration, located the north magnetic pole and the northwest passage. Sailing in June 1910, in Nansen's famous ship, the FRAM, he led the Norwegian antarctic expedicion which resulted in the discovery of the south pole, December 14, 1911. After an unsuccessful attempt to fly to the north pole by airplane in 1925, he succeeded, 1926, in passing over the pole in the dirigible Norge, traveling from Spitzbergen to Alaska. With Nobile, one of his associates in this trip, Amundsen was later involved in a bitter controversy. When Nobile in 1928 was lost in an attempt to repeat the feat, Amundsen flew by airplane to his rescue, but perished in the Arctic Ocean.
