Amundsen Roald Norwegian explorer who in 1903-06 became the first person to navigate the Northwest Passage. Beaten to the North Pole by US explorer Robert Peary 1910, he reached the South Pole ahead of Captain Scott 1911. In 1918, Amundsen made an unsuccessful attempt to drift across the North Pole in the airship Maud and in 1925 tried unsuccessfully to fly from Spitsbergen, in the Arctic Ocean north of Norway, to the Pole by airplane. The following year he joined the Italian explorer Umberto Nobile (1885-1978) in the airship Norge, which circled the North Pole twice and landed in Alaska. En 1911, il atteint le premier le pôle Sud. Après une tentative en 1925, il survole le pôle Nord en 1926. Il disparaitra dans l' ARCTIQUE , en recherchant l'Italien Nobile, disparu avec son dirigeable. Lorsqu'en 1925, le milliardaire américain Ellworth propose à Amundsen de financer une expédition aérienne au pôle Nord, le Norvégien en accepte l'idée. Le 21 mai, au Spitzberg, il est à bord de l'un des 2 hydravions qui prennent l'air en direction du nord. A moins de 250 kilomètres du but, l'un des appareils doit se poser, en panne. L'autre amerrit à sont tour. Les lourdes machines se retrouvent prisonnières de la BANQUISE . Amundsen et ses 5 compagnons transportent dans l'hydravion intact l'essence et les vivres du second. Mais pour faire redécoller l'appareil, il leur faut tracer un piste de 500 mètres dans la banquise bosselée. Rationnant leurs maigres provisions, ils nivellent la GLACE au couteau durant 24 JOURS . Ils repartent enfin, serrés dans la carlingue. On leur fait, à la base, un retour triomphal : partis depuis 26 jours, on les croyait perdus à jamais.
