Wullschlager, Jackie Hans Christian Andersen The Life of a Storyteller . xvii, 489 p., 44 halftones, 2 maps. 6-1/4 x 9-1/4 2001, 2002 Paper OBE $19.00 0-226-91747-9 Spring 2002 Beloved by generations of children and adults around the world for tales such as "The Ugly Duckling" and "The Emperor's New Clothes," Hans Christian Andersen (1805-1875) revolutionized children's literature. Although others before him had collected and retold folk stories and fairy tales, Andersen was the first to create the stories himself, instilling a previously stilted genre with new humor, wisdom, and pathos. Drawing on letters, diaries, and other original sources (many never before translated from the Danish), Wullschlager shows in this compelling, extensively researched biography how Andersen's writingsdarker and more diverse than previously recognizedreflected the complexities of his life, a far cry from the "happily ever after" of a fairy tale. As we follow in his footsteps from Golden Age Copenhagen to the princely courts of Germany and the villas of southern Italy, Andersen becomes a figure every bit as fascinating as a character from one of his storiesa gawky, self-pitying, and desperate man, but also one of the most gifted storytellers the world has ever known. "This ambitious, authoritative and astute Andersen biography deserves to become the standard life for years to come."Ian Finlayson

Andersen, Hans Christian (1805-1875)

Biographical notes by Blake Wilfong "Most of the people who will walk after me will be children, so make the beat [of my funeral music] keep time with short steps." Hans Christian Andersen (1805-1875) was a Danish author whose fairy tales (or fantasy stories, if you prefer) have become an integral part of our culture. Virtually everyone is familiar with "The Emperor's New Clothes", "The Little Mermaid", "The Princess and the Pea", "Thumbelina", or "The Ugly Duckling". The son of a poor shoemaker, Andersen was catapulted into fame and fortune by his children's stories during the 1840s. He traveled Europe, rubbing shoulders with royalty, and luminaries like Franz Liszt, Victor Hugo, and Charles Dickens. His renown continues todayand yet few of us remember his poems, plays, novels, travel books, and memoirs. Or his science fiction.

Mit Livs Eventyr
The Fairy Tale of my Life Das Marchen meines A native of Denmark , Hans Christian Andersen is one of the immortals of world literature. The fairy tales he wrote are like no others written before or since. " The Steadfast Tin Soldier ", " The Snow Queen " , " The Swineherd " , " The Nightingale " Hans Christian Andersen was born in Odense in a one-room house on April 2, 1805. When he was 11 years old, his father died and he was virtually left alone. He went to school only at intervals and spent most of his time imagining stories rather than reading lessons. He could memorize very easily and learned some of his lessons by listening to a neighbourhood boy who was in the habit of studying aloud. He memorized and recited plays to anyone who would listen and imitated ballet dancers, acrobats or pantomists . To put an end on this, his mother apprenticed him first to a weaver, then to a tobacconist and finally to a tailor. Hans Christian knew these occupations were not for him. The only things that held his interest were the theater, books and stories. When he was 14, he decided to go to
