Apuleius
Lucius Apuleius was a philosopher and rhetorician tried for using magic to win an older, wealthy bride, but he's better known for his novel about the mysteries of Isis, the tale of Cupid and Psyche, and the semi-biographical misadventures of its hero, Lucius. He was born in about 124 in Madauros, Numidia, received his education in Carthage and Athens and then traveled around the Mediterranean learning about religious mystery rites. In 158 he delivered a speech recorded as Apologia Apuleii in the multicultural town of Sabratha, Tripolitania (modern Libya), as a defense against the charge of using magic to win a wealthy older bride, Pudentilla. It may be of use as an organ of af iell. Platonic philosopher, rhetorician, and author remembered for The Golden Ass a prose narrative that proved influential long after his death. The work, called Metamorphoses by its author, narrates the adventures of a young man changed by magic into an ass. Apuleius, who was educated at Carthage and Athens, traveled in the Mediterranean region and became interested in contemporary religious initiation rites, among them the ceremonies associated with worship of the Egyptian goddess Isis. Intellectually versatile and acquainted with works of both Latin and Greek writers, he taught rhetoric in Rome before returning to Africa to marry a rich widow, Aemilia Pudentilla. To meet her family's charge that he had practiced magic to win her affection, he wrote the Apologia ("Defense"), the major source for his biography. For The Golden Ass it is likely that he used material from the lost Metamorphoses by Lucius of Patrae, which is cited by some as the source for the brief extant Greek work on a similar theme

Ancient History Sourcebook:
Lucius Apuleius (c.155 CE):
Isis, Queen of Heaven
The cult of Isis was one of the most important of the empire wide cults in the later empire, and perhaps its greatest monument is in Lucius Apuleius very strange novel, The Golden Ass. Here Isis appears to Lucius, and claims to be all goddesses. We see here the workings of an intense religious syncretism. Isis is here the Queen of Heaven, and principal of all the gods and goddesses.
When I had ended this prayer, and made known my needs to the Goddess, I fell asleep, and by and by appeared unto me a divine and venerable face, worshipped even by the Gods themselves. Then by little and little I seemed to see the whole figure of her body, mounting out of the sea and standing before me, and so I shall describe her divine appearance, if the poverty of my human speech will allow me, or her divine power give me eloquence to do so. Thus the divine shape breathing out the pleasant spice of fertile Arabia, disdained not with her divine voice to utter these words unto me:

Lucius Apuleius
Apuleius: from the Encyclopedia Britannica
(b. c. 124, Madauros, Numidia [near modern Mdaourouch, Alg.]d. probably after 170), Platonic philosopher, rhetorician, and author remembered for The Golden Ass, a prose narrative that proved influential long after his death. More influential than this collection of the author's declamations on various subjects are his philosophical treatises. He wrote three books on Plato (the third is lost): De Platone et ejus dogmate ("On Plato and His Teaching") and De Deo Socratis ("On the God of Socrates"), which expounds the Platonic notion of demons, beneficent creatures intermediate between gods and men. His De mundo ("On the World") adapts a treatise incorrectly attributed to Aristotle. Apuleius' claim that he was also the author of numerous poems and works on natural history has not been proved, and the noted Asclepius, a Latin version of a Greek dialogue, has been wrongly attributed to him. His collected works were first edited by Joannes Andreas (1469); later editions include one by R. Helm and P. Thomas (1907-31) and the Index Apuleianus by W.A. Oldfather, H.V. Canter, and B.E. Perry (1935).
