Amazigh Philosopher and World Advocate. (c. 124 c. 180 AD). Lucius Apuleiusis known as the author of several prose masterpieces written in Latin.
http://www.tazzla.org/apuleius.htm
APULEIUS OF MADAUROS Amazigh Philosopher and World Advocate (c. 124 - c. 180 AD) Lucius Apuleius is known as the author of several prose masterpieces written in Latin. Apuleius of Madaurus wrote in the language of the Roman conquerors of North Africa. However, Apuleius was not a Roman. He was a native of North Africa and proud of it. Little has been made of his "Berber" origins, and the fact that he was not Roman by birth. Apuleius was strictly a citizen of Rome due to the fact that his ancestral land was then a Roman colony, and Roman citizenship had been granted to the inhabitants of the colony of Madauros. Apuleius is best remembered for his brilliant novel, the Metamorphoses, also known as The Golden Ass. He is the author of Florida and of three philosophical treatises, entitled De Plato De Socrates , and De Mundi . In addition, a great deal of recent scholarship has paid close attention to another of his works, Apologia Defense ,) a unique document in the Latin classics. It is a piece of linguistic virtuosity, thought to have been orally delivered by Apuleius in his own defense in front of pro-consul Claudius Maximus and a court of Roman magistrates convened in Sabratha, a North African city not far from Tripoli. He stood accused of sorcery, an offense punishable by death under Roman law enacted in the first century. He was indeed a "Barbarian," as he presented himself in this extraordinary speech he gave during the trial held in 158 AD. He delivered a piece of oratory so remarkable that it was circulated in print after the trial and, fortunately for posterity, was preserved in its entirety. What subsequent scholarship has failed to emphasize, however, is that Lucius Apuleius was the first Amazigh philosopher and novelist of world fame, indeed the first African to publish outside Africa. (1) He was a "Barbarian" who demonstrated with amazing virtuosity and wit that he could speak and write Latin as well as any educated Roman, and more in tune with Greek philosophy, Platonic ideals, and ancient Egyptian wisdom than the majority of his contemporaries. While Apologia has been hailed as a linguistic tour de force, magic in and of itself, it is more than superb rhetoric: it conveys an essential message reaching all Imazighen of yesterday, today, and to-morrow.

(fl. A.D. 125) Lucius Apuleius was born in Numidia, North Africa. He was trained as a lawyer, worked in Rome , but spent most of his time in Carthage . His literary works include De Daemone Socratis [On the God of Socrates] (n.d.), on the subject of invisible spirits, and Metamorphosis , or The Golden Ass, which is a narrative concerning the adventures of a young man in the form of a golden ass. "The Myth of Cupid and Psyche" is a narrative in The Golden Ass, which has been retold many times: by John Milton in Comus (1634), John Keats in his "Ode to Psyche," (1819), Walter Pater's Marius the Epicurean (1885), and William Morris's Earthly Paradise (1868-1870). This version of the story taken from Latin is by Thomas Bulfinch and appears in his Mythology

This is the first of many tales embedded in the novel. At first glance, it is only loosely connected to the plot, but a closer look reveals that this tale is typical in many ways of the larger story. The three characters Socrates, Aristomenes, and Lucius experience similarly strange and unexpected twists and turns of Fate, especially due to magic. Furthermore, it is this tale which, instead of serving to warn and frighten Lucius, actually whets his appetite for magical experience and knowledge.

The Golden Ass of Apuleius Mythology and Consciousness The Golden Ass,written by Apuleius in the second century A.D.,is a rewarding read for anyone embarking on the exploration of Consciousness. It is very simply the story of a young man who is punished for his ignorant behaviour by being metamorphosed into an ass.Paradoxically it is while he is an ass that he begins to understand the nature of Consciousness. Lucius, the "hero" of this story, sets out on a journey to acquire power by learning the secrets of magic. In tantric terminology he is trying to tap into feminine energies via the left-hand path. If we relate this to our map of Consciousness,Lucius is identifying with the mindless emotions of Netzach (Aphrodite),while splitting himself from the wisdom of Binah, and the consequences are predictable. In this story the dark aspect of the Goddess,Netzach, appears in the person of the witch,Meroe.Lucius is initially terrified of Meroe when he sees her murdering an acqauintance of his named Socrates. However, when he meets another witch Pamphile and her slave-girl Fotis his desire to learn their magic becomes intense. When he learns that Fotis has access to an ointment which could turn a human being into a bird,he begs her to give him some of this. Her feelings towards him are ambiguous, and she "mistakenly" gives him a different ointment which turns him into an ass who has the mind of a human being. He literally makes an ass of himself. What at first sight seems a disaster turn out to be salvation for Lucius,as he is now forced to ask himself those questions he had previously neglected:"Who am I,an ass or a human being?","Why am I here?","How did I come to be here?".Thus he dicovers Consciousness.

Notes for Salman Rushdie: The Satanic Verses Selected sources I have drawn on these books and articles in creating these notes. However, this is far from being a comprehensive bibliography of scholarship on The Satanic Verses, nor is it intended to be a list of the best sources. Rather it consists primarily of sources which provided assistance in tracking down allusions in the novel. Many fine interpretive articles and books are not listed. Unfortunately I cannot cite some of my most useful sources, since they involved personal communication with persons who did not wish to be cited by name. However, out of many others I am happy to thank Massud Alemi Martine Dutheil , Paul Harmer, Azfar Hussain Suzanne Keene Joel Kuortti Sudhakar Chandrasekhara ... Ina Westphal , Mel Wiebe, David Windsor and James Woolley for identifying various references. Special thanks are due to Salman Rushdie, who kindly answered some particularly knotty questions and made a number of helpful suggestions about this project. His contributions are marked "personal communication from Salman Rushdie." This statement should not, however, be taken to imply his endorsement of this site either in its entirety or in detail.
