CURLE MSS. II
The Curle mss. II, 1922-1928, consist of a series of letters and cards from Countess Mary Annette (Beauchamp) Russell, 1866-1941, novelist, to Richard Curle, 1883-1968, author. A native of Australia who became the wife of Count Henning August von Arnim of Prussia and later married John Francis Stanley Russell, the 2nd earl Russell, she wrote under the pseudonym of Elizabeth, best known for her work, Elizabeth and Her German Garden. The correspondence is conducted from her home at White Hall Court in London and from her summer residence Chalet Soleil, Randogne sur Sierre in Switzerland. The contents center around invitations to tea, gifts of Conrad books from Curle, philosophic observations on life and death, and occasional comments on relatives and acquaintances among whom were Joseph Conrad and Katherine Mansfield. Russell, Mary Annette Beauchamp Russell, Countess 1866-1941, English novelist, b. Sydney, Australia; cousin of Katherine Mansfield. In 1890 she married Count Henning von Arnim and went to live in Germany. There she wrote her first novel, Elizabeth and Her German Garden (1898), which was immediately successful, and its successors, including The Solitary Summer (1904), and The Pastor's Wife (1914). Highly autobiographical, her novels are witty, gay, and gently satirical. Her husband died in 1910, and in 1916 she married the 2d Earl Russell, brother of Bertrand Russell. Among her later works are The Enchanted April Love Jasmine Farm (1934); and Mr. Skeffington

ISBN 88-339-1280-9 «Voglio restare da sola per l’intera estate... Sarò felice, nessuno verrà a disturbarmi...».
    e Stati Uniti.

An earlier painting still (1622), and attributed to Giovanni Francesco Barbieri known as Il Guercino (1591-1666), shows two shepherds looking at a skull on a stone pedestal on which the words are inscribed. Elizabeth von Arnim (1866 -1941)
Described as "one of the three finest wits of her day", and greatly admired as a literary figure in Europe, Mary Annette Beauchamp was born in Sydney, Australia, but raised in England. The family called her "May". She met her first husband, Count Henning August von Arnim-Schlagenthin, while traveling with her father in Italy in 1889. They married in London the following year and lived in Berlin at first. After five years, the von Arnims removed to a family estate in Pomerania 90 miles north of Berlin, Nassenheide. This schloss and derelict garden is the basis for her first novel, Elizabeth and Her German Garden published anonymously in 1898. Twenty-one books followed and were signed "By the author of Elizabeth and Her German Garden" and later simply "By Elizabeth". Elizabeth gave birth to four daughters and a son, with the Count. The children's tutors at Nassenheide included such notables as E.M. Forster and Hugh Walpole. Unfortunately, in 1908 debt forced the von Arnims to sell their idyllic estate. They moved to England where Count von Arnim died in 1910. Buying a site in Switzerland, Elizabeth built the Chateau Soleil where she worked on her books and entertained friends. These included H.G.Wells (a lover) and Katherine Mansfield (a cousin). At the outbreak of the first World War she escaped to England, but one of her daughters died in Germany.
