MATTHEW ARNOLD (1822-88) was the son of Dr Thomas Arnold, the revered and formidable headmaster of Rugby. After graduating from Oxford in 1844, with second class honours, he spent several years travelling and indulging an apparently frivolous interest in literature, only to surprise his friends and family with the publication of The Strayed Reveller, and Other Poems in 1849. This was followed, in 1852, by Empedocles on Etna, and Other Poems , and then, in 1853, by Poems , a collection that established Arnold as a leading poet of the day and that also included a Preface that was his first important publication in prose. Arnold married in 1851 and also began work in that year as one of 'Her Majesty's Inspectors of Schools'. He held this arduous job for thirty-five years, travelling widely both in England and abroad, and was, in addition, Professor of Poetry at Oxford from 1857 to 1867.

M atthew Arnold was born in 1822, the same year that Percy Shelley drowned. He was born at Laleham on Christmas Eve. He was the son of Dr. Thomas Arnold, the revered headmaster of Rugby; and he earned early recognition for his poetry as a student at that school. Arnold also studied at Balliol College, Oxford University under a classical scholarship. Instead of applying himself to any one subject, he read widely. He also read a great deal of Roman and Greek literature. He became a close friend of Arthur Hugh Clough.

    Matthew Arnold (1822-1888)

    Matthew Arnold (1822-1888)
Matthew Arnold was a major nineteenth-century British poet and literary critic, whose poems include "The Scholar-Gypsy," "Rugby Chapel" and "Dover Beach." Arnold was educated at Rugby School, where his father was Headmaster, and at Oxford University. The poet William Wordsworth was a family friend. Although Matthew Arnold was greatly respected as a poet, a literary critic, and a writer on social, political and religious issues, he never earned his living by writing. To support himself and his family, he spent most of his working life as a government school inspector. He was also a professor of poetry at Oxford from 1857 to 1867. When King wrote The Secret of Heroism , he used a quotation from the poem "Rugby Chapel" as part of the introduction. King met Arnold's niece, Mrs. Humphry Ward, in 1899, and through her he met Arnold's granddaughter, Eleanor Whitridge (later Greenough, then Thwaites), who lived in the United States. King and Eleanor Whitridge became friends, and over the years she gave him many Matthew Arnold items – 29 autographed letters, mainly to members of the family, including one holograph letter from Matthew Arnold to his wife Frances Lucy Arnold, and four letters from his father, Dr. Thomas Arnold. These letters are now in the W.L. Mackenzie King Papers at the National Archives of Canada. Eleanor Whitridge also gave King a number of books by Arnold, some annotated. These are now in the National Library of Canada or in Laurier House.
