ORIGINS OF MODERNITY
Aubrey, John (1626-1697)
Miscellanies upon the following subjects : I. Day-fatality; II. Local-fatality; III. Ostenta; IV. Omens; V. Dreams ... XXI. Second-sighted persons; XXII. The discovery of two murders by an apparition / Collected by John Aubrey. The second edition, with large additions. To which is prefixed some account of his life.
London : Printed for A. Bettesworth etc., 1721.
The English virtuoso John Aubrey (1626-97) was fascinated by reports of supernatural phenomena and corresponded with the Scottish savant Dr James Garden on the latter’s encounters with ‘second sight’. This is the ability to foresee future events by divine revelation. Aubrey’s Miscellanies gives the first account of second sight in print. His data is derived from Garden. Indeed there was widespread interest in second sight. For example, copy of a letter from Garden to Aubrey on second sight is to be found among John Locke’s manuscripts.

He was educated at Oxford at Trinity College, then studied law in London at the Middle Temple. Later in the 17th century, Aubrey proposed that Stonehenge was a temple built by the Druids, the priests of the pagan Celts who came to centuries immediately preceding the Christian era. This theory is still widely believed, despite the fact that it was disproved in the 20th century by modern archaeological techniques. Find books about John Aubrey in the Stonehenge Book Shoppe

Aubrey's 'Brief Lives'
April 5, 2002 John Aubrey (1626-1697) was singularly unsuccessful in his worldly affairs. Having lost all his rather extensive property in a tangle of disastrous lawsuits, he was free to devote himself to sociability (he was well-loved by a large circle of friends, including some of the leading men of his time) and his antiquarian interests. Aubrey was a pioneering archaeologist and an indefatigable researcher. He had lived through the English Civil War and the Commonwealth, and he was acutely aware that since then everything had changed: continuity had been broken; the whole pre-Puritan world had passed out of existence; and he felt a strong urge to preserve what he could. Nevertheless, Aubrey lived in the present: he was one of the original members of the Royal Society and he remained fully abreast of the advances of his day. He began collecting biographical material when the dreadful Oxford don Anthony Wood enlisted him to provide material for Wood's dictionary of Oxford writers and churchmen; but Aubrey's gathering of biographical facts soon took on a life of its own. He collected vast amounts of material, but he was constitutionally unable to bring work to a finished state. His

AUBREY SENDS BIOGRAPHICAL RESEARCH TO ANTHONY WOOD AUBREY (JOHN, 1626-1697, antiquary ) AUTOGRAPH BIOGRAPHICAL NOTES, evidently prepared for and sent to Anthony Wood, mentioning the translation of an Abridgement of Plowden's Commentaries into English by Fabian Hicks ('our frend Fabian Philips never heard of till from you') and a benefaction by Edmund Wyld, correcting a mistaken identification of George for John Wyld, with a short biography of the latter ('You still in yr Qs talke of George Wyld'), sending information about Sir Richard and Dr Richard Napier, and also referring to having sent him a pamphlet with verses of John Earles at the end; Aubrey's notes are written on the verso and recto of part of an address leaf in what is almost certainly Wood's engrossing (ie. address panel) handwriting ('For Mr John Aubrey At Mr Kents house at the three black posts in Suffolk street neare'); the information about the Napiers on the verso is in the hand of Sir Richard Napier's son according to two notes by Aubrey ('The learned Dr Rich: Napier of Linford in [B]ucks was Sr Rich: uncle. Elias Ashmole Esq hath all the MSS that he inserted by Aubrey written on two sides of an oblong octavo slip, two small holes and tears with very slight losses of text, docketed 'from Mr Poore's collection', hinged to a folio leaf [no date, but probably1689]
