Jane Austen, 1775-1817 Jane Austen was a supreme English Romantic prose stylist and novelist whose writings have secured her a place in the English Literary Canon. Born in 1775, the second daughter of a parish rector, Jane Austen lived all her life as a member of the landed gentry in the English country side. Though she was not published until she was thrity-five, Austen was a prolific writer from adolescence until her death in 1817. Neither Jane or Cassandra ever married. Their lives as members of the landed gentry consisted of much travelling to visit family and friends. Her observations during her travels of the intricacies of this social class serve as inspirations for her writings. Throughout her literary career, Jane constantly revised her writings. In 1810, Sense and Sensibility was accepted for publication. Like most female writers of her day, none of Austen's works were published under her own name in her lifetime. Instead, Sense and Sensibility was published "By a Lady," and subsquently Pride and Prejudice was published "by the Author of Sense and Sensibility By 1813, Jane's writings were selling out and netting her a profit.

    Jane Austen
Jane Austen (1775-1817) was a prominent British novelist. She stands as a model of the writer whose apparently sheltered life did nothing to reduce the stature and drama of her fiction. Her first novel (pub. posth.), Northanger Abbey, pokes fun at the Gothic novels of Ann Radcliffe. Austen is most famous, however, for her later works, which took the form of socially conscious comedies of errors. These, especially Emma, are often cited for their perfection of form, while modern critics continue to unearth new perspectives on Austen's keen commentary on the predicament of young, unmarried, upper-class English women in the early 1800s. The order in which she began and completed her novels is different from that of publication. Her novels were fairly well received when they were published, with Sir Walter Scott , in particular, praising her work. Her reputation has only increased since, and she is now considered one of the greatest English novelists. [Adapted from Wikipedia

Jane Austen was born in the village of Steventon, Hampshire in 1775, within five years of Wordsworth and Scott. She was the seventh of eight children. Her father, George, had been a Fellow of St. John's College, Oxford and lately Rector of Steventon. Her mother, Cassandra, nee Leigh, came from an ancient family, linked to the Leighs of Stonehill Abbey in Warwickshire. Jane and her sister, also Cassandra, were sent to school in Oxford and Southampton, before attending the Abbey School in Reading , and were encouraged to write from an early age. Jane started writing novels in 1790, at the age of only 14, while she was living in Steventon, although her first novel to be published, Sense and Sensibility , did not appear until 1811.

Austen never married, had no contact with the London literary circle; she, nevertheless, elevated her life, - a "little world of struggling clerical families, husband-hunting mothers and daughters, eligible clergymen and landowners, country fools and snobs" - into an enduring microcosm of the great world through her writings, distinguished by her "satirical wit and brilliant comedy, complex and subtle view of human nature, exquisite moral discrimination, and unobtrusive perfection of style ( Benet's Austen was a traditionalist who thought that natural or absolute morality come before the needs, real or supposed, of society. "If I were in doubt as to the wisdom of my actions I should not consult Flaubert or Dostoevsky . The opinion of Balzac of Dickens would carry little weight with me: were Stendhal to rebuke me, it would only convince me I had done right: even in the judgment of Tolstoy I should not put complete confidence. But I should worry for weeks and weeks, if I incurred the disapproval of Jane Austen." ( Cecil Austen's completed novels, were (with their publication dates):

    Jane Austen
