Jane Austen Jane Austen is one of the greatest English novelists of the 19th century. Her witty, satirical and romantic fiction marks the transition in English literature from 18th century neo-classicism to 19th century romanticism. Jane Austen was born on December 16, 1775, in the village of Steventon, near Basingstoke, in Hampshire. The seventh of eight children of the Reverend George Austen and his wife, Cassandra, she was educated mainly at home and, even in her adult years, continued to live with other members of her family. In her childhood, she was surrounded by her older sister, Cassandra, her six brothers, and the other boys who lodged with the family and whom Mr. Austen tutored. Jane wrote her first novel, Love and Freindship (sic) when she was fourteen. This was followed by, A History of England by a partial, prejudiced and ignorant Historian and several other juvenile works. Jane went on to write six major novels. Sense and Sensibility (1811), Pride and Prejudice Mansfield Park (1814) and Emma (1816) were published during her lifetime, while a gothic parody

Jane Austen's Life and Family.
Her childhood and early creative work (Steventon, 1775-) Jane Austen was born December 16th, 1775 at Steventon, Hampshire, England (near Basingstoke). She was the seventh child (out of eight) and the second daughter (out of two), of the Rev. George Austen, 1731-1805 (the local rector, or Church of England clergyman), and his wife Cassandra, 1739-1827 ( Pride and Prejudice ) couldn't have given his daughters much to marry on. More than one reader has wondered whether the childhood of the character Catherine Morland in Jane Austen's novel Northanger Abbey might not reflect her own childhood, at least in part Catherine enjoys "rolling down the green slope at the back of the house" and prefers cricket and baseball to girls' play. In 1783, Jane and her older sister Cassandra went briefly to be taught by a Mrs. Cawley (the sister of one of their uncles), who lived first in Oxford and then moved to Southampton. They were brought home after an infectious disease broke out in Southampton. In 1785-1786 Jane and Cassandra went to the Abbey boarding school in Reading, which apparently bore some resemblance to Mrs. Goddard's casual school in Emma . (Jane was considered almost too young to benefit from the school, but their mother is reported to have said that "if Cassandra's head had been going to be cut off, Jane would have hers cut off too".) This was Jane Austen's only education outside her family. Within their family, the two girls learned drawing, to play the piano, etc. (See "Accomplishments" and Women's Education.)

Jane Austen
Jane Austen was born on December 16th 1775 at Steventon Rectory, near Basingstoke, Hampshire , where her father worked as the vicar of Steventon. Being the seventh of eight children, Jane always felt specially united to her eldest sister, Cassandra, with whom she went to different schools at Oxford, Southampton and Reading up to she was eleven years old. From then onwards her father took pains so that she could have a good educaation and encouraged her in reading so that when she was twenty years old she spent most of her time writing (short stories in general).
Because of her natural curiosity she did notice any pattern of behaviour that was strange or uncommon according to her own image of the world and this would appear in her novels. The time she spent at Steventon and her active social life provided her with all the information she needed to develop the scenery and characters for her works. There she would write 'Northanger Abey', 'Sense and Sensibility' and 'Pride and Prejudice' though this works were not published then.
At the age of 25 her family decided to move to Bath (1801), because her father wanted to retire there and spent the rest of his life in that part of England. Jane did not feel quite enthusiastic about this change and despite it provided scenes for some of her books, she did not embark on any of her following novels during the five years she was there.

Austen, Jane
from the Encyclopedia Britannica, 11th edition
During her placid life Miss Austen never allowed her literary work to interfere with her domestic duties: sewing much and admirably, keeping house, writing many letters and reading aloud. Though, however, her days were quiet and her area circumscribed, she saw enough of middle-class provincial society to find a basis on which her dramatic and humorous faculties might build, and such was her power of searching observation and her sympathetic imagination that there are not in English fiction more faithful representations of the life she knew than we possess in her novels. She had no predecessors in this genre. Miss Austen's "little bit (two inches wide) of ivory" on which she worked "with so fine a brush"her own phraseswas her own invention.
Her best-known, if not her best work, Pride and Prejudice , was also her first. It was written between October 1796 and August 1797, although, such was the blindness of publishers, not issued until 1813, two years after Sense and Sensibility , which was written, on an old scenario called "Eleanor and Marianne," in 1797 and 1798. Miss Austen's inability to find a publisher for these stories, and for

"JANE AUSTEN was born on 16 December 1775 at Steventon near Basingstoke, the seventh child of the rector of the parish. She lived with her family at Steventon until they moved to Bath when her father retired in 1801. After his death in 1805, she moved around with her mother; in 1809, they settled in Chawton, near Alton, Hampshire. Here she remained, except for a few visits to London, until May 1817, when she moved to Winchester to be near her doctor. There she died on 18 July 1817. "Jane Austen was extremely modest about her own genius, describing her work to her nephew, Edward, as `the little bit (two inches wide) of ivory, on which I work with so fine a brush, as produces little effect after much labour'. As a girl she wrote stories, including burlesques of popular romances. Her works were published only after much revision, four novels being published in her lifetime. These are Sense and Sensibility Pride and Prejudice Mansfield Park (1814) and Emma (1816). Two other novels
