Jane Austen: A Pathfinder Introduction Library of Congress Subject Headings Browsing Areas Locations ... Web Resources Introduction
Jane Austen is considered to be one of England's greatest authors, second only to William Shakespeare. Both scholars and general fans study her life and works; some even believe that Austen-mania has reached cult levels. There are many reasons for her popularity, the main being that at the heart of her stories are themes accessible to all audiences: friendship, love, misunderstanding, and family. Her works remain timeless, frequently being adapted for television and films. Austen's language is fresh and witty, making Regency England come alive for the reader. To read her characters is to wonder what the author herself was like. This pathfinder is meant for undergraduate students studying Jane Austen, specifically those studying at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. The items cited here relate principally to Jane Austen's life; it is not meant to be a guide to critical works on her writing.

"I am looking about for a sentiment, an illustration, or a metaphor in every corner of the room. Could my ideas flow as fast as the rain in the store-closet it would be charming." Birthplace

Hampshire, England
Education
Private tutoring; boarding school. Her father encouraged her in her education and literary ambition.
Did you know?
Love and Freindship, written at 14, (an epistolary send-up of the cult of sensibility), takes its name from a very un-Austen-like phenomenon: a spelling mistake. At 15 she produced A History of England ("by a partial, ignorant and prejudiced historian").
Critical verdict Critically well received from publication on (Walter Scott articulated the enduring perception of her "exquisite touch which renders ordinary commonplace things and characters interesting"), her fans are passionately committed to an oeuvre which, maybe more than any other, bears repeated reading. Some dissenting voices, such as Charlotte Brontë's, have found her cold and limited.

AUSTEN, JANE (1775-1817),
During her placid life Miss Austen never allowed her literary work to interfere with her domestic duties: sewing much and admirably, keeping house, writing many letters and reading aloud. Though, however, her days were quiet and her area circumscribed, she saw enough of middle-class provincial society to find a basis on which her dramatic and humorous faculties might build, and such was her power of searching observation and her sympathetic imagination that there are not in English fiction more faithful representations of the life she knew than we possess in her novels. She had no predecessors in this genre. Miss Austen's "little bit (two inches wide) of ivory" on which she worked "with so fine a brush"her own phraseswas her own invention.
Her best-known, if not her best work, Pride and Prejudice , was also her first. It was written between October 1796 and August 1797, although, such was the blindness of publishers, not issued until 1813, two years after Sense and Sensibility , which was written, on an old scenario called "Eleanor and Marianne," in 1797 and 1798. Miss Austen's inability to find a publisher for these stories, and for

Jane Austen
British author, 1775-1817. Jane Austen stands as a model of the writer whose sheltered life did nothing to reduce her fiction.  Her novels are conventional in form and in their middle-class assumptions about the needs and desires of young British men and women in 1800.  But they are keenly drawn, sharp with insight and possessed of a remarkable and durable charm. Pride and Prejudice The story is a deep analysis of character.  Every character is finely crafted, generally to contrast with others and demonstrate a point about the social niceties of love and marriage.  Charlotte, Elizabeth's best friend, is clearly a very intelligent woman. She marries Mr Collins to ensure herself a happy and comfortable life. As a result, Elizabeth comes to a much dimmer view of her. It's debatable whether this is an example of Elizabeth's prejudice or Charlotte's lack of passion. Frequently Elizabeth is blinded by her own prejudice, particularly her prejudice against Mr Darcy's pride, from where the title of the novel comes. Persuasion is the last novel Jane Austen wrote, and generally considered the most romantic.  Anne Elliott has been persuaded to reject Captain Wentworth, the love of her life, because of his poverty and poor prospects.  Some years later he returns into her life and gradually their love reasserts itself.  A simple story, perhaps, but deeply moving and very funny.

Jane Austen was born 16 December 1775 at Steventon Parish, Hampshire, England. She was the seventh child and second daughter of the Rev. George Austen and Cassandra Leigh-Austen. Jane was devoted to her older sister, Cassandra-Elizabeth, and eventually wrote enough letters to her to choke a horse. When Cassandra, age 10, was sent away to school in Oxford , Jane begged to be sent along with her even though she was too young. Mr. Austen, however, couldn't really afford their schooling and the girls were back home after less than three years. Apart from this, Jane never lived outside of her family circle again . She ended up very well-educated for a female, though. Her oldest brother James helped her out by organizing reading lists for her, and Jane could lay claim to a good knowledge of history as well as a little Latin, Italian and musical training. It was 1787 when Jane made the decision to devote all her spare time to writing. This early work made three volumes of Juvenilia , and you can see all that satire just dying to come out. In 1791, she wrote a parody of Oliver Goldsmith's

Although Austen was widely read in her lifetime, she published her works anonymously. The most urgent preoccupation of her young, well-bred heroines is courtship, and finally marriage in the world dominated by men. Austen herself never married. Her best-known books include PRIDE AND PREJUDICE (1813) and EMMA (1816). Virginia Woolf called her "the most perfect artist among women." "It is a truth universally acknowledged, that a single man in possession of a good fortune, must be in want of a wife." (from Pride and Prejudice Jane Austen was born in Steventon, Hampshire, where her father was a rector. She was the second daughter and seventh child in a family of eight. The first 25 years of her life Austen spent in Hampshire. She was mostly tutored at home, and irregularly at school. Her parents were avid readers and she received a broader education than many women of her time. Her favorite poet was Cowper. On her father's retirement, the family sold off everything, including Jane's piano, and moved to Bath. Austen started to write for family amusement as a child. Her earliest-known writings date from about 1787. Very shy about her writing, she wrote on small pieces of paper that she slipped under the desk plotter if anyone came into the room. In her letters she observed the daily life of her family and fiends in an intimate and gossipy manner: "James danced with Alethea, and cut up the turkey last night with great perseverance. You say nothing of the silk stockings; I flatter myself, therefore, that Charles has not purchased any, as I cannot very well afford to pay for them; all my money is spent in buying white gloves and pink persian."

Jane Austen early 19th century novelist whose works are remebered for their wit and social satire.
Austen lived her life in an upper-middle class family during the early 19th century in England. It is the day-to-day life of people in this society that is the primary focus of her work.
The near perfection for which Austen's novels are known today is a result of her extensive rewriting of these works during her life. Only four of her novels were published during her lifetime, and her contemporary society was, for the most part, unaware of her outstanding achievements.
Austen's works combine romantic comedy with social satire and a witty view of her contemporary society.
