Mary Hunter Austin A SK THE AVERAGE READER to identify Mary Austin (1868–1934) and you will likely get the answer I did: "Isn't she the lady who wrote the book about the desert?" This label says a great deal about Mary Hunter Austin as a regional writer–her most successful books such as The Land of Little Rain and The Land of Journeys' Ending are ones which grew out of her personal knowledge of the land she lived in. Her home desert country is that triangular portion of California lying between the eastern slopes of the Sierra Nevada and the Nevada state line and extending south to the Mojave. This is the "Land of Little Rain" where Mary Austin lived for seventeen years. The second region associated with her is the high plateau country lying between the Colorado and Rio Grande rivers, the traditional homeland of many of the Indian peoples she studied–the Pueblo, the Zuni, the Hopi, the Navajo. When she wrote about this country she called it "Land of Journeys' Ending" because she believed that this part of the Southwest would be the center for a new regional culture–one which would combine the Indian, Spanish and Anglo influences and one which would grow out of a people's successful adaptation to the environment. In her early works such as The Land of Little Rain The Flock (1906) and Lost Borders These things are worth knowing for their own sake, but in addition, Austin believed that they help us see man's place in his physical environment. Austin, Mary Hunter Mary Austin By courtesy of the Museum of New Mexico, Santa Fe (1868-1934), novelist, short-story writer, and playwright Born on September 9, 1868, in Carlinville, Illinois, Mary Hunter graduated from Blackburn College in 1888 and soon afterward moved with her family to Bakersfield, California. She married Stafford W. Austin in 1891, and for several years they lived in various towns in California's Owens Valley. Austin soon learned to love the desert and the Native Americans who lived in it, and both figured in the sketches that comprised her first book, The Land of Little Rain (1903), which was a great and immediate success. It was followed by a collection of stories, The Basket Woman (1904), a romantic novel, Isidro (1905), and a collection of regional sketches, The Flock (1906). In 1905 she separated from her husband and moved to Carmel, California. She later traveled to Italy, France, and England, where meeting H.G. Wells and other intellectuals strengthened her feminist ideas and added a deep commitment to socialism to her own deeply personal and sustaining form of mysticism. Returning to New York City, she became associated with John Reed, Walter Lippmann, and others of the group of writers and artists whose center was Mabel Dodge Luhan. Mary Austin Desert Lover Mary Hunter Austin (1868-1934) The story goes that when Mary Austin was four years old, she had a mystical experience at a walnut tree. Despite her young age, Mary had a vision of herself, the tree, and all plants and animals enclosed in a "bubble of livingness." Mary's ecological awareness of the interconnections between life forms became the dominant theme of the natural history and philosophy books and stories she would write as an adult. Mary's best known book is The Land of Little Rain which was published in 1903. The book looks at the deserts of Arizona and Southern California in close-up detail, providing a picture of the landscape and the wildlife that lives there. Despite the seeming desolation of Death Valley, Mary uncovers its beauty and shows that even though the area is not a place that supports human survival, it has its own purposes and does not depend on humans to endow it with worth. Although The Land of Little Rain sold well, Mary wasn't happy with it and was embarrassed when her husband showed it to friends. She had set high standards for the book and felt that she hadn't reached them. In all, Mary wrote nearly thirty books and hundreds of short works. Her essays, novels, plays, short stories, poems, and articles all spring from her observations of the indigenous peoples and terrains of California, Arizona, and New Mexico, and are written from a unique, but not hard-hitting, feminist perspective. It wasn't until long her death in 1934 that her work was revisited and celebrated for its feminism. Mary was born on September 9, 1868.
