BETWEEN ZOLA AND CELINE:
THE STRANGE TRAJECTORY OF MARIANO AZUELA
Where does one draw the line between iconoclastic satire and cynicism? It is commonly said that the purpose of satire is correction and this seems as useful an explanation as any. No matter how brutally a target is lampooned, the satirist usually has a vision of a better world created through a necessary process of social change. The cynic, on the other hand, has not one iota of reforming zeal. In his biography of Joe McCarthy, Richard Rovere applies St. Augustine's term "those canine philosophers" to individuals like the rogue senator from Wisconsin. The defining characteristic of such people is "a disbelief in the possibility of sincerity" which would account for McCarthy being baffled when a man he had publicly labeled a traitor wouldn't go out to a bar and drink with him after the hearings. Believing humanity to be irredeemably corrupt, the cynic nonchalantly shrugs off instances of tyranny and injustice that drive the satirist to furiously attack the repressive society generating such behavior. Emile Zola's caustic novels, which spotlighted a grim world of exploited miners, Paris prostitutes and alcoholism, brought against him charges that he was a cynical naysayer and even a pornographer. Yet Zola had a flaming passion for justice. At the time of the Dreyfus case, he had to flee to England to escape imprisonment following publication of

Azuela began his medical practice in 1899, writing short stories and novels in his spare time. In 1915 he joined Francisco Villa's revolutionary forces as a surgeon. From this experience came his modern classic, Los de abajo (1915, tr. The Underdogs, 1929), which depicts the military exploitation of indigenous people. The novel is composed of linked sketches that are starkly realistic. After Villa's defeat Azuela took refuge in Texas. Returning to Mexico in 1916, he resumed his medical practice and his writing, taking little interest in politics. Among his later novels are Los fracasados [the defeated] (1908);

Mariano Azuela Just a few blocks from the site where the Centro de Trabajadores Agrícolas Fronterizos is found, lived Mariano Azuela. His modest apartment was located on Oregon Street, in apartment 609, in front of the Sacred Heart of Jesus Church. It was there that he wrote and published "Los de abajo" (The Underdogs) in 1915, a significant novel of the Mexican Revolution. This doctor, writer, and revolutionary was born in Lagos de Moreno, Jalisco and died on March 1, 1952 in Mexico City. In Guadalajara, he pursued an education until eventually becoming a medical surgeon. Along with his studies, in his youth, he also initiated a writing carreer. In 1903 in los Juegos Florales de Lagos, he obtained a diploma for his narrative piece, "De Mi Tierra." He emmigrated to the United States to El Paso, Texas where he wrote "Los de abajo," which was published in December of 1915. In 1917, he returned to Mexico City and worked in a public doctor's office. He received the National Prize for Literature in 1949.
