FRANCIS BACON (1561-1626)
Francis Bacon was the son of Nicolas Bacon, the Lord Keeper of the Seal of Elisabeth I. He entered Trinity College Cambridge at age 12. Bacon later described his tutors as "Men of sharp wits, shut up in their cells of a few authors, chiefly Aristotle, their Dictator." This is likely the beginning of Bacon's rejection of Aristotelianism and Scholasticism and the new Renaissance Humanism. His father died when he was 18, and being the youngest son this left him virtually penniless. He turned to the law and at 23 he was already in the House of Commons. His rich relatives did little to advance his career and Elisabeth apparently distrusted him. It was not until James I became King that Bacon's career advanced. He rose to become Baron Verulam, Viscount St. Albans and Lord Chancellor of England. His fall came about in the course of a struggle between King and Parliament. He was accused of having taken a bribe while a judge, tried and found guilty. He thus lost his personal honour, his fortune and his place at court. Loren Eiseley in his beautifully written book about Bacon The Man Who Saw Through Time remarks that Bacon: "...more fully than any man of his time, entertained the idea of the universe as a problem to be solved, examined, meditated upon, rather than as an eternally fixed stage, upon which man walked."

Francis Bacon
Francis Bacon was born in 1561 into a family prominent at the English court. He himself became a successful courtier, familiar with Elizabeth and James. He was an influential member of the House of Commons until 1621 when his political career was destroyed because he was convicted for taking bribes as a judge (even though he argued that accepting bribes did not influence his judgment... During his career he had served as solicitor general, attorney general, and, for three years, Lord Chancellor. In 1626 he died of a chill caught while stuffing a chicken with snow to determine whether cold would retard the putrefaction of animal tissue. Thus, it might be said he was a victim of his own inductive method. His contributions as a philosopher are principally contained in three works, Advancement of Learning, Novum Organum , and The New Atlantis Back to the core text

Aphorisms

This site offers Bacon's "Aphorisms on the Interpretation of Nature and the Empire of Man" in one text file. Are there Ciphers in Shakespeare?
Penn Leary writes that it is considered "lunacy to question the authorship of ... Shakespeare." Leary further states, "This is hardly enough to credit the authorship to Bacon, but it arouses skepticism upon the claims of the other three leading contenders." Historiographical Review
Historical interest in Bacon has revived recently, as scholars in the history of women, especially, have reexamined the Baconian philosophy. Bacon's metaphors relating to nature are now seen as perniciously male-conquest and rape, for interest. In addition, we can see Bacon's role as a lawyer and statesman as influencing his ideology of science. Rather than ancillary to the development of the mechanical philosophy, masculinization of nature and legal atomism are seen by some historians as shaping the substance of the mechanistic paradigm and as preparing English society for acceptance of the new philosophy of nature. For graduate students, a useful introduction to the newly emerging interpretation of mechanism would be to review the shift from the older Bacon literature (Anderson, Cajori, and Farrington) to the new studies (Jardine, Keller, Leary, Schiebinger). Undergraduates would get a useful term paper out of reading an original work by Bacon, such as The New Atlantis ( published 1627), according to one of the new interpretations.

Sir Francis Bacon
The English writer, philosopher and statesman Sir Francis Bacon (1561-1626) was educated in Cambridge. At the age of fourteen Bacon finished his education and went to Paris. In the French capitol he was introduced to humanism.
The political career of Francis Bacon started when he was elected for the House of Commons in 1584. Bacon proposed schemes for the union of England and Scotland and recommended measures for dealing with Roman Catholics. For these efforts he was knighted in 1603.
By James I he was appointed Lord Chancellor in 1618. In 1621, his political career ended after he was charged by the Parliament with accepting bribes.
In the following years Francis Bacon concentrated on philosophy and literature. Francis Bacon pursued an advancement of science. He maintained that all prejudices and preconceived attitudes had to be abandoned. Scientific cooperation should not end at geographical boundaries. Bacon's philosophy emphasized the belief that people are the servants and interpreters of nature. The best publications of his philosophical work are "Advancement of Learning" (1605) and "Novum Organum" (1620).

Bacon, Francis (1561-1626)
As for the narrations touching the prodigies and miracles of religions, they are either not true, or not natural, therefore impertinent for the story of nature. As the birds of living creatures at first are ill-shapen, so are all innovations, which are the births of time . . . Surely every medicine is an innovation; and he that will not apply new remedies must expect new evils; for time is the greatest innovator. But men must know, that in this theater of man's life it is reserved only for God and the angels to be lookers on. For whatever deserves to exist deserves also to be known, for knowledge is the image of existence, and things mean and splendid exist alike. Great hypocrites are the true atheists. It is sufficiently clear that all things are changed, and nothing really perishes, and that the sum of matter remains absolutely the same.
