David Grayson, McClure's Magazine in 1897, for which he wrote some famous muckraking articles. With other McClure's contributors he purchased the American Magazine in 1906 and helped edit it. The first book of quiet country sketches by "David Grayson," Adventures in Contentment, appeared in 1907; the series continued with Great Possessions The Countryman's Year (1936), and others. An intimate of Woodrow Wilson, Baker was sent to Europe in 1918 as one of the president's special agents to study the war situation. At the peace conference at Versailles, Baker was director of the press bureau of the American peace commission. Worrying about the future is a waste of time
By MARION DE VELDER
Special to The Sentinel It was an auspicious, crowded occasion. "A White House Millennium Evening," hosted by the president and first lady. Free on CNN. Two renowned scientists were speakers. First was Vinton Cerf on "Internet Architecture and Technology." We are entering a whole new exciting world. We will be supplied with (as it were) millions of tiny electric motors to do all kinds of little miracles to run almost anything and everything to share, generate, and manipulate a world of information. This vast information "system" will become our new telephone network, connecting everyone in the world with cellular phones for instant connection. The Internet will cover everything imaginable our privacy will be invaded and intellectual property will be up for grabs. This rapidly emerging "system" will be central to all communication (and learning) in the future. To resist is futile. We will need to comply and enjoy. My head began to spin and I sat forward in my easy chair. What next?
