Robert Cushman Butler, reputed to be a nephew of the famed actress Charlotte Cushman, lived in Chestnut Hill, near Philadelphia. As an avocation, he collected theatrical illustrations, manuscripts, and books, apparently with the intention of binding published theatrical material from his personal collection into new, or "Grangerized" editions of theatrical books. Grangerized books consist of casual inserts or published texts ("extra-illustrated texts") combined together in new covers to make idiosyncratic versions of texts that were not actually published together (or even published at all). This "scrapbook assembly within a book" is named after James Granger, who promoted such practices in his Biographical History of England After his death in the mid 1930s his widow placed the entire collection in the attic of their home. There it sat undisturbed until the early 1970s, when Dr. Terry Theodore, then of the Washington State University Department of Speech, learned of its existence. He negotiated with Mrs. Butler for its purchase, eventually acquiring the Robert Cushman Butler Collection of Theatrical Illustrations for the Washington State University Libraries.

Personal Names Index to the Writings
of Alfred Russel Wallace

The following compilation represents an index of personal names (and a few organizations) that appeared in Wallace's writings. To produce the index I examined every page of every item listed in the "Wallace Bibliography" list, keeping track both of each name that appeared, and how many times it appeared. Only those names that Wallace referred to in more than simple citation terms are included (i.e., names that appeared as part of systematic synonymies, straight citations, etc. are not included unless Wallace also mentioned the persons involved in some further fashion in the main text of his writing). Once I had a "raw" list of names, I attempted to verify and/or distinguish the persons involved using various reference tools (Wallace often refers to people by their last name only, so a few errors are possible in this regard).
The editions of the books indexed here are as follows: Palm Trees of the Amazon S713 (original 1853 edition);

The Museum featured works by almost every nineteenth-century writer for children, from Jacob Abbott to Sophie May; it also excerpted works for adults, among them Herman Melville. Especially during 1857-1867, the magazine printed pieces written by its subscribers: some adults, many not. Alphabetized by author's real name (where known); use control-F to search for pseudonym. Except for Melville, ONLY SIGNED PIECES ARE LISTED HERE. Author's birth/death dates appear after the name; pseudonyms are listed just before titles, which are in alphabetical order. Number after each title is the year the piece was printed. Authors who were subscribers are marked with an asterisk (*). For page numbers, see " By title ". His biography was written (in Dutch) by his pupil Bakhuizen van der Brink (1865); for an appreciation of his services to classical literature see L. In A’ ugust 1866 he was knighted. In the same year he published The Albert N’yanza, Great ‘Basin of the Nile, and Explorations of the Nile Sources, and in 1867 The Nile Tributaries of A byssinia, both books quickly going through several editions. In 1868 he published a popular story called Cast up by the Sea. In 1869 he attended the prince of Wales, afterwards King Edward VII., in a tour through Egypt. In the same year, at the request of the khedive Ismail, Baker undertook the command of a military expedition to the equatorial regions of the Nile, with the object of suppressing the slave-trade there and opening the way to commerce and civilization. Before starting from Cairo with a force of 1700 Egyptian troops—many of them discharged convicts
