Children's Literature
Island 4: Boys' Stories of School, Adventure, and Empire Series publishing for gifts and prizes The pioneer writer of boys' adventure stories was Frederick Marryatt (1792-1848), an ex-naval officer who wrote a whole series of shipboard novels. His Masterman Ready, or the Wreck of the Pacific , first published in three volumes in 1841-42, is a desert island story in the tradition of Robinson Crusoe and Swiss Family Robinson . It was ten years later before a second edition was called for, but many more followed. The reprint shown here, from Frederick Warne's Prize Library series in 1891, is open at a typical publisher's catalogue of the period, listing title after title suitable for gifts and school (or Sunday School) prizes. R. M. Ballantyne and boys' adventure stories R. M. Ballantyne (1825-1894), the son of an Edinburgh printer who was apprenticed to the Hudson's Bay Company in Canada as a teenager, created boys' adventure stories that both instilled the values of manly independence and conveyed (from the author's personal experience) an extraordinary range of information about exciting, dangerous new career opportunities. His best-known work Coral Island is shown in an earlier case. Displayed here are a reprint of Ballantyne's first book

To Cariboo and Back/By/M. Ella Chaffey/ [ornament] /COLUMBUS, OHIO/THE BOOK CONCERN/ [19?] [all within a dbl. border]. As the book's title suggests, gold-panning in the Cariboo is the centrepiece of the story. However, the plot is less conventional than most such tales with the addition of a small girl, a lost will and some background of urban Toronto in 1858 and 1867. The Preface is dedicated: 'To Boy who once lived in British Columbia and now lives in California. "Lest he forget"'. 382 [ornament] /TALES/OF/THE NORTHERN SEAS./ [pict. ornament] /London:/THE RELIGIOUS TRACT SOCIETY;/56, PATERNOSTER ROW; 65, ST. PAUL'S CHURCHYARD;/AND 164, PICCADILLY./ [19?] [all within a dbl. border]. The contents include a description of the land around the North Pole, an account of 'Esquimaux' life and whaling in Baffin Bay. Each chapter ends with a brief, religious homily as befits a Religious Tract Society author. 383 [WALSHE, Elizabeth Hely].

Added col. pict. t.p., half-title. Burnham was born at Peterborough, Ontario, and became a lawyer and a member of parliament as well as a writer. (Rhodenizer p. 730). His Jack Ralston leaves his home in Montreal to join the service of the Hudson's Bay Company in Labrador where he quickly achieves a position of trust and leadership. Although the story is filled with exciting incidents, and a touch of romance, its main thrust is the hostility between the Eskimo and the Indians which the Hudson Bay people tried to ameliorate in the interests of trade. The author of this book strongly favoured the Eskimo, and was extremely denigrating towards the Indians of the region. 430 [DE MILLE, James] 1837-1880.
