89. TRM: Humour In Imaginative Fiction
Among some of the earliest works in the genre is a trilogy of books by John KendrickBangs (18621922) set on the river Styx (the river that borders Hell).

Humourous imaginative fiction
by Georges T. Dodds
This article is a slightly modified and updated version of an article which first appeared in WARP (The Newsletter of the Montreal Science Fiction and Fantasy Association - MonSFFA
R. Reginald and D. Menville, in their notes to the Lost Race and Adult Fantasy Fiction catalogue of Arno Press , cite F. Anstey as the father of modern humorous fantasy. His works, from Vice-Versa in 1882 to Salted Almonds in 1906, are collected in the 1931 title Humour and Fantasy (reprinted by Arno Press ). I must say that until I read the catalogue, I had only very vaguely heard of F. Anstey, and that I remain ignorant of his work.
Similarly, while I have seen the movie Topper , I have yet to read the book of the same title by Thorne Smith, or any of his other novels. Writing mostly in the '20s and '30s, Smith produced several "society novels" with strong elements of humour and fantasy. These include, amongst others, The Bishop's Jaegers The Lamb in the Doorway The Night Life of the Gods Topper Topper Takes a Trip , and Turnabout . Several of these titles were early Pocket Books and several were reprinted in the late 70s by Ballantine
Now on to material I've actually read. Some children's books, such as:

Faerie Folk
Welcome to ~*Violet Moon's*~ Faerie Folk Garden!
We've gathered little folk from around the world to share their favorite poems and short tales...
Garden Entrance
by: Constance Barkley Lewis Half a human world away
Long before once upon a time
Fairies would spend the livelong day
Romping o'er countrysides sublime.
But bit by bit, the humans came
Enroaching on their fairy ground
And fairies could not play the same With mortals lumbering around. The fairies soon felt sore displaced; They had no other place to go. They couldn't get rid of the human race, What would they do? They didn't know. And so, the Fairy Council met For several days and then some hours Deciding that the surest bet Was to make their homes among the flowers. Each fairy chose its own sweet bloom, So that flower and fairy together Made magic, music, sweet perfume, And sunshine whatever the weather. Come enter the garden of magical pleasure Where the fairies frolic and flowers sway To the music of wind chimes, come at your leisure
