James Matthew Barrie, el creador de Peter Pan -una de las más grandes creaciones de la literatura universal- fue uno de los más destacados dramaturgos y novelistas en la historia de Escocia. Sus obras ponen de manifiesto una muy particular e irónica forma de ver la vida: como una aventura romántica. Pan, el dios griego de la naturaleza mitad niño, mitad bestia, es una figura recurrente en la cultura europea, especialmente después de los Románticos; es el héroe juguetón de los bosques que nunca envejece. Barrie tenía cinco años cuando apareció Alicia en el país de las maravillas, en 1865, y para cuando comenzó a escribir, los íconos famosos de la niñez eran los niños en lugar de las niñas. James Barrie creció dentro de una familia numerosa al norte de Escocia. Cuando tenía cinco años, su hermano David murió en un terrible accidente. David tenía trece años para entonces. En su dolor, la madre de Barrie se retiró a un cuarto oscuro durante meses.     The child of a Kirriemuir weaver, James Barrie never grew taller than 5ft 1 inches in height. He was one of the most successful writers of his day, but it is for Peter Pan, the story of the boy who never grew up, that he is mostly remembered today.
